Question about Beverage-Air MT45 Beverage Cooler Commercial
I purchased a 3-door glass-front MasterBilt unit (used) from a guy on Craigslist. He told me it was a cooler and / or freezer. But, no matter where I set the thermostat the box termperature drops to 20 degrees or slightly less.
The box temp. has been around 40-50 degrees for the last 2 weeks probably because it was iced up. I would really like to use this unit as a freezer and not a cooler.
Last Friday I found the evaporator coil iced up so I called a local refrigeration tech out. He cleaned all the coils with a solution and told me to clean the evaporator fan blades. He put gauges on the compressor and the low side was running at 45 psi. with the box at room temperature (around 70 degrees). He said it didn't need refrigerant and it is running R12. He told me to let it run for a couple of days and see what it does. When I came in the store this morning there was ice on the side of the compressor and going up the line to the evaporator coil and I don't think the compressor EVER shuts off. I also cannot find a defrost heater anywhere around the evaporator.
I am thinking about replacing the thermostat but not sure if that is what's causing it to ice up. Here are the numbers that I found on the unit.
MasterBilt Model # BMC O
Thermostat #19-00903 -Technician said it looks like it's been replaced. This is a pigtail type thermostat that slides in between the coils of the evaporator.
Sorry this is so long, but hopefully someone can help me sort this out.
With no heaters or defrost timer, it is most likely not a freezer unless someone removed all that. As best as I can tell, I can not find anything that equates to the temperature and pressures you related to. It could be either low on Freon or the R-12 has been removed and an alternate Freon installed to replace it. Hope this helps.

The starting components on the compressor could be going bad. You need to turn off the thermostat and then after about five minutes turn it on while listening to the compressor to hear if it kicks in, if it doesn't then you might have faulty starting component, more likely the overload.

SOURCE: beer cooler keeps freezing
Could be but sounds like it may be low on gas. What emp do you set it at. Should be about 35 degrees if you have it set to low it will ice up on you. Russ

You would need to be a certified refrigeration technician to even buy R-12, since it is a CRC refrigerant. The kegerator probably doesn't have service ports so you would either have to braze a low-side port in or use a piercing valve, and fix wherever the refrigerant leaked out from. Basically, by the time you pay a refrigeration tech to do all this, it isn't worth it and you would be better off buying a new one
