Heya folks, what a great site... I have the same problem but with my Kenmore Elite Top load Model 20954. I cannot locate the nut that holds the agitator together. Ive taken cap off and I see that the 'dogs' are stripped but I cant seem to take the agitator off. It also seems to be attached to a string and I can see some tabs that may allow me to take off assembly by pushing in the tabs. however, it seems the agitator is spring loaded into the main assembly and Im just afraid that if i do that, I wont be able to load the spring up again.

Can anyone help? Island boy in need of assistance... LOL. Thanks for your help.

Yes agitator dogs. they rotate outward when the agitator cranks backwards and rotates the top agitator. you can find them at most appliance stores. they range 5-25 bucks. you will need a ratchet, socket (size unsure but believe 1/2"), small screwdriver, and an extension 8" for the ratchet. if you are doing the work, i expect it will take you about 1/2 hour total time. with your parts in hand follow the instructions below. 1. with small screwdriver pry the top cover off the top of the agitator. you will see the line when you start prying it. then work it loose with your hand. 2. look inside there is a plastic cover with a small tab . pull this out, it just pulls out. 3. at this point you have exposed the set nut. this is what actually holds down the top agitator to the base unit. 4. with the ratchet unscrew the bolt inside its about 3/4" to 1" long. and pull bolt (unscrewed) out with your hand. now the unit is ready to pull off. Note you may need to hold the bottom base with one hand while u unscrew bolt. 5. slowly work the top agitator upward holding the base part down. it may be a little sticky. be patient. once your get it off. 6. turn the top agitator that u just pulled off upside down..you will then see the dogs and that they are held in with a plastic sleeve. carefully pull off the sleeve and replace each dog, one by one. some will be broken some will be stripped. there are 4 of them. once done reverse the process you will be able to try the agitator by turning it cclockwise. it should catch. if at this point it does not you may need to replace the agitator which is about 50- bucks or so. with the same process to change out. gl k

There is a is a cheap part that fits at the top to make it agitate. Go to your friendly dealer, buy and install. These go frequently.

My washing machine will drain an spin but will not agitate

There is a good possiblity that the agitator coupler is bad. reach into the machine and try to spin the agitator. If the whole thing spins then you have a bad coupler. Some agitators are a two piece design and the top half is supposed to turn freely one direction and catch the other. if you have that type and the top spins both ways but the bottom stays still you have a bad agitator. To remove agitator, grab the bottom and pull up hard. Its only held on by plastic fingers

How to disassemble the agitator after removing from the tub. The cam and dawgs need replaced. Agitator top and bottom appear pressed together.

After you remove the cap on top there will be a 7/16 nut. Remove that nut. The whole thing should slide up and off. If you put the agitator on the ground and stand on two sides of the base and give a quick ****, It will seperate. Slide the sleeve away from the dogs and replace them. The top snaps back together, slde back on spindle and replace the 7/16 bolt. Replace cap.

Top part of agitator is loose and wobbles and

These are called "dogs" and they are replaceable and do not cost much. Basically, they keep the agitator locked in position when the shaft moves in an oppisite direction so the agitator can step forward.

They should be fairly simple to remove with a phillips screwdriver or a 1-4 in nut driver. take them to a reputable appliance parts store and they will be able to sell you replacements.

These are made to wear out and be replaced so the agitator itself doesnt wear, which is a whole different story to replace. Left-handed shaft screw. Undo it in a clockwise direction and slide the agitator off the shaft if you find that replacing the dogs does not work.

Bottom of agitator works, top half does not. Dogs appear to be worn. How do you fix this?

remove the agitator by removing the agitator bolt in the center then the pieces will all come apart, don't just buy the dogs, get the whole cam kit, it doesn't cost much more and it comes with all the replacement parts for the internal agitator

Top part of agitator appears to becoming disconnected from bottom part. bottom is attached to motor and is working.

Hello Friend, Your problem is easily solved. You need to replace the agitator dogs. To replace all you have to do is pop the top cover off of agitator and remove bolt. Pull up on agitator and remove from washer. Next remove upper agitator from lower agitator. Inside the upper agitator top piece you will see a mechanism that has 4 little ratcheting teeth, these are called agitator dogs. Just replace them with new ones and re-install agitator. This should solve your problem. Happy to help, Tim.

Not fully agitating

2 things
First is that I assume this not to be a 1 piece agitator. If it was the whole thing should turn back n forth Make sure its top (nut) fastner is tight. Usually just push down slightly and turn Clockwise.

A sectioned agitator has a lower section separate fro the upper. The lower can be attached to the agitator shaft and will move back n forth but the top has teeth that engage 1 way and allow slippage when the agitator comes back the other way. This "ratchet" action (some whirlpool older models that i have seen) if it has teeth ground off or grease build up under the teeth can cause them to stop agitating and just kind of sit there.

Drain and remove the clothes,
Take the top by hand and try turn it back n forth see if bottom moves. If the top is slipping and the bottom stays put remove the top nut (turn Counter Clock Wise) and try remove the upper section. If you can get it off you may be able to see why its not turning, and get the part to fix it.

Please let me know if this helped you. Rate me with as high a mark as you can. thanks and good luck.

Washer will not agitate on wash cycle

could be a belt (doubtful) or it could be the connector underneath the. if the bolt isn't tight, it could be sliding along the cutout that makes the agitator work. tip forward and check it from beneath/backside whicheverr has the easiest access to view the connections.
