Hardly easily done. It's a problem with the panel and very rarely can be helpd in plasma TVs.

There is no invertor board on a plasma tv. The fault is the X address buffer board. This is located on the bottom of the screen and runs horizontally the whole width of the screen. If you remove the heatsink plate that covers the x address boards and you need to look at the screen ribbon at the same position as where the bar is (in the middle).Vary gently lift the Xbuffer ribbon lock and gently take out the ribbon.Clean the contacts very carefully with a fibre pen or an electrical cleaning fluid.Insert ribbon back and heatsink and check. Here is a picture of the board and ribbon

a 1 inch bar is associates with 1 ribbon fault. So if the bar was 3 inches in from the left of the screen, the faulty ribbon will be 3 inches in from the right working from behind the TV. If cleaning dont cure the fault, then the Buffer IC will be blown and order a new centre buffer board (you can buy off Ebay)

The LG plasma TV with the black vertical bands, may be the bad connections, you can try to reconnect the cables on the X board. If the bad connections on the panel side, you need to replace the panel.

Screen shrinks down to a narrow band of light in

You have bad grounds on the vertical IC. The grounds will need resoldering and check for weak caps near the ic.....they will overheat the ic...creating the bad grounds. Solder will expand and contract with heat and cooling of a tv. HMMMM you could also have a cold solder elsewhere on the board. Search and you shall find.

There is a black line straight down the middle of the picture. Is there an adjustment for that? The Tv is only a little over a year old.

sounds like you have a deffective segment in the screen. if it's still under waranty see if you can have the tv replaced with a refurbished model.

Blach block out

if your big black square starts about the middle of the tv & goes down close to the bottom, you have closed caption text turned on. normal closed caption is small, but test caption, is just a big black box with no writing in it. go into your menu & shut it off, it could even be a button on your remote called, "caption", or "cc". good luck.
