I have the same problem. The mouse just froze in the middle of the screen and won't move. I bought an external mouse an it works fine. The computer is only six months old. AGGRAVATING!

Here is what I did to get the touchpad to start working again. My laptop is Gateway and a couple years old, running Windows Vista.

1. Start>Control Panel
2. Double-click on Mouse icon (or button, depending on how you're systems set up).
3. When a the Mouse Properties window pops up, choose the Device Settings tab.
4. Click on the Settings... button.
5. A new window pops up and on the right side there is a list of options - choose Tapping.
6. Once clicked, there is a check box that allows you to Enable Tapping.
7. Click OK to close out your windows and the tapping option should be enabled on your touchpad.

Hopefully this helps.

My touchpad could'nt open in e.g. folders etc. everything is enabled, i tried reinstall drivers and this motherf still annoys me. it has lost the **** functions like two fingers scroll or zoom in and zoom out or rorate and so on who was in damned drivers. everything was working good, but after 20 mins for about, when i left my laptop sleeping this stupid thing started mess with me.... i even tried to backup my system...
when its choosed righthand option, the left button and sensitive area react for clicking or tapping, but the right button does. it's strange, but pressure graph shows everything normally when i touch my pad, so i guess the problem is in the system, probabbly windows. so ok... when i switch to lefthand, then i can open my foldiers by tapping or right button clicking. anyways when i restart my computer or wake him up from sleep mode the right button becomes like it was righthanded before and when i touch my pad it makes a click to enter the functions field too (like a right button with righthanded funct.)
im using windows 7 home premium 64-bit, synaptics drivers (i was using the newest of them, when defect became, i think made everything with programs so i even reinstalled driver to the older version) im going to freakout! arrgrhhh

Mouse pad won't work

whenever any device stops working first try re-installing it as follows:
go to start -> control panel -> devices -> press on + sign to open each device.
scroll down till u reach ps/2 mouse, right click mouse and release on uninstall., switch computer off (hard reset) and back on windows will then re-install driver during boot - up.
if that doesnt work go to laptops website and download its touchpad driver (most called synaptics) and install.

Touch pad does not operate. have uninstalled and reinstalled correct driver and PC device manager says device is working properly with no conflicting programs. generally, the pad did not really operate...

Hello,

it is possible that the touch pad is disabled. Check control panel to actually confirm.

Since your touch pad is not operating, you will need an external mouse to perform this task.

Here is what you have to do to check if the touch pad is disabled.

Turn on your laptop, wait till it boots completely.

Click start,

Scroll to Control Panel select Control Panel.

Under control panel, (you will find a Mouse icon), click Mouse and a dialogue box will pop out.

On the dialogue box, click "Device settings".

Under device settings, you will find "Synaptics Touchpad..."

Highlight the "Synaptics Touchpad..." by clicking on it once, then click enable.

By now the mouse pad should be enabled. Apply the changes for it to take affect.

If the above doesn't solve the problem, try performing system. System restore can help to back date your computer to the time when the touch pad was working....

Go to Start > All programs > Accessories > System tools > System restore. Read and follow instructions.....

If the two solutions does not work, please let me so that I can further help you.

Yours sincerely.

Frozen mouse with a touch pad laptop computer

Many laptops have a button, usually located right above the touchpad, that disables the touchpad.

And there may be drivers that need to be loaded for some touchpads to operate properly, in case you've reinstalled the OS.
