Keep in mind that when the battery is low, it will still power up but won't function correctly, It may get stuck at the startup screen, it may work correctly and have no sounds, or any other weird, unexpected behavior. It can also do this while connected to the charger. If you run into problems like this just power it down and put it on the charger for 12 hours. Then see what happens. Hope that helps.
My 500 has just started to do this.i have phoned TomTom up and numerous calls to independent tom tom repairers and everything they told me to do was tried not once but several tjmes over a period of 3 days, all to no avail. I am just about to send my 500 back to TomTom in scotland to be fixed, this is the only way out for me, of course you could always scrap it and buy another. !!!!!

What is your charging method? In car or house hold plug? Suggest that charger is not working (Green) if light on Tom Tom (at bottom near charger lead) is not lighting. Check your charger and see if you have an indicator light on it showing it is on. If yes, plug in Tom, then press and hold the "on" button for 15 seconds constinuously. Tom Tom should reboot.
If you have a tom tom from the GO models
they hace a reset button you can press with a pin were the mount fits.
When you plug in the charger the green light should come on to say it is chargeing.
Try the car adapter to charge the tom tom
look for a small hole on the outside case near the sd card reader. might need a paperclip or pin to poke the microswitch inside the hole. simply clicking the switch doesn't work, try holding it for 5 seconds then try to power up. Common problem with GPS devices, (my mio included) is after being plugged in for a long time, the battery life becomes nil and it relies upon the charger. Check tom to xl for further problem solving. google search TOM TOM XL won't power up.
I had the same problem and found a solution on another forum...
Plug the battery into the charger. The yellow and green lights come on. Leave the battery plugged into the charger. Plug and unplug the charger power cord from it's power source a few times until the the red charger light comes on..... problem solved!
I think the "smart" circuit in the charger that is supposed to trickle charge before the regular charge cycle needs at least some battery power to test and start the cycle. If the battery is totally discharged, the test can't deternine the battery status and will not charge.... Plugging and unplugging the charger seems to bypass this teat and charge the battery normally. The charging process should work normally after this method.
turn device over and look for tiny reset button near to power connect strip. then use a blunt safety pin to reset, this should allow you to then turn it on,this works on 500 ,700 ,900 , 510 , 710 , 910 , hope this helps .
