Re: strange symbol on screen. able to make calls but not...
This rings bells.
On some of the early Nokia GSM phones, shorting out a certain combination of the contacts on the connector on the bottom of the phone would kick it irreversibly into the "headset" profile. Never did find out what this feature was for, but it was a real pain if you kept a buch of keys in the same pcket as your phone.
Things that might help:
1. Changing profiles (perhaps set the phone to "meeting", then back to "general"
2. Finding and using "restore factory defaults" in the settings menu.

have you used BItPim on it? if you have and it stopped working its done i have alot of exp with this phone if you havent used that then have you dropped it or got it wet or whaever that could be it but the only thing i can think of with this phone is bit pim
can you still hear? if you can you prob need to have just the LCD replaced. if you cant hear your flex cable might have to be replaced or might have gotten disconnected. So you phone did not get wet just dropped? if so you can take it to a repair shop and have it fixed if you have the money but i would fix it myself it is not too hard and you can buy the parts off ebay, so much cheaper. My razr's display recently got ruined because it got wet. repair shop said they would not touch it since it was water damage. they said to get knew phone. im glad i did not listen and decided to fix myself. everything but the screen worked. since i still could make calls and hear i knew it was not the flex cable( connects bottom half to top) and that it must just be the lcd. my dad has same phone and i used his to see if i was right. i was so i order a lcd part from ebay for $30. Thats with shipping. so if i were you i would try to fix it myself it is not too hard
simple solution, open your mobile cover and clean your earphone socket and make the two bruss colour pin which connect your earphone with circuit little high so that it connect both the part each other,
