Computer does not recognize printer

We have had a photosmart 3310 printer and used it in our previous residence. Upon hooking up the unit in our new place nothing, other than the copier, works. I have tried reinstalling the software, changed the cable, and still nothing. Had a paper jam on first print job, removed paper from the rear, no tears, "no paper left behind". In the status bar of the printers it keeps coming up "error" and I have to cancel documents and try again. Has always been a bit testy w/one of our computers, never with the other. Both on vista, HP. Unit seems to go thru the gear motions every so often when it is on.
Ideas?
Thanks.

SOURCE: Flashing Lights on HP 690C - Won't Print

Hi Stev, First I know this is going to sound strange but have you disconnected the printer cable from the printer itself? (not the computer) If not try unplugging both the parallel and power cables for 30 seconds, then when you reconnect and power up hit the resume button. I've seen problems in the past where a job was killed like that and the printer would not work until the parallel cable was removed from the printer. The light pattern you describe, resume light blinking with the power light on, can mean any one of the following things on that model HP. 1. Top cover is open. Open the top and make sure there is nothing keeping the cover from closing all the way. Don't forget to check the underside of the cover for something stuck to it. Close the top cover. 2. A print cartridge is missing or an incorrect print cartridge is installed. Install the correct print cartridge. AND/OR Verify that the print cartridge is properly snapped into place. Close the top cover. 3. Printer detects an out-of-media condition. Load media in the lower (IN) tray and press the Resume button. 4. Media is improperly loaded. Remove media from the IN tray, re-square the stack, and reload. Make sure that the media-width adjuster and media-length adjuster are against the stack of media. Make sure that media is not buckled in the IN tray. Verify that the media-width adjuster is along the left edge of the tray and is pushing the right edge of the media against the right wall. 5. The printer timed out waiting for a form-feed command. Press the Resume button. The page will eject from the upper (OUT) tray. 6. Printer detects out-of-ink condition. Replace the print cartridge and press the Resume button. 7. Dirty Cartridge Contacts Use a clean foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water. (Distilled water is recommended. Tap water might contain contaminates that could damage the cartridge.) Locate the copper-colored circuitry strip on the back of the cartridge. Clean the copper-colored strip with the dampened swab or cloth. Do not wipe the nozzle end of the cartridge or touch the silver-colored nozzle plate on the bottom of the cartridge. Unplug the power cord from the printer. Clean the carriage contacts on the back wall of the ink cartridge carriage with a damp foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth. Use a dry foam-rubber swab or lint-free cloth to remove the moisture from the contacts. If the carriage contacts show noticeable damage, contact the HP Customer Support Center listed in the printer's User's Guide. Plug the printer back in and try printing again. 8. Printer detects paper in the paper path. Turn the printer off and open the top cover. Make sure that paper is not jammed in the printer. Lift the right black rectangular paper sensor (located in the middle of the printer just below the silver rod on which the cartridge carriage slides) and make sure that nothing is stuck under the paper sensor, perhaps by blowing under the sensor. Close the top cover and turn the printer on. Try printing again. If none of this helps let me know and I'll see what else I can dig up on the problem. El Duderino

SOURCE: Photosmart 2575 printer is offline - won't print

Hey jonboy - You do not want to delete it. It is automatically installed with Vista. In simple terms, you know when you go to print something and it asks you questions like print all pages, print page 1, etc? Well XPS basically is there for so when you go to print, you have the option of printing to a file instead of paper. You've always had that option ( whether or not you knew it) but this is just a new way of doing it and that's why it's listed under printers. It's sort of like a virtual printer. I'll say no more about that and just hope you understood what I said. As far as the other printer, it's already selected as default, go back in where you found the printer status, right click on your Photosmart and click on use online. That should do the trick.
I hope you understood this stuff. If this solves your problem PLEASE rate this as fixed. If you still have a problem, DON'T RATE it yet just add a comment and I'll be happy to assist you further. Thanks.

In Vista make sure you are logged in as a administrator whenever you make any changes.

And if not to bring the printer online you will have to right click on the printer icon and right click on Run as administrator> and then try bringing the printer online and checdk if it works.

And you can delete the Microsoft XPS Document writer it is a default printer icon installed if in case you did not have a printer installed you can store them to print later.
Now that you already have a printer you can delete the Microsoft XPS Document writer.

Good Luck

Photosmart 3310 is on network but not recognized wirelessly

Sounds like another Vista Bug, i would check the HP site for this issue and if its under warranty, contact HP. If you have alot of Blue tooth devices hooked up, it may be that its trying to use another device in its place or the signals are getting crossed, im not positive.

Its like when you have to many network drives all hooked up and you plug in a USB device, Windows pops up those anoying bubles saying its detected, but in My computer it doesnt show.

So bassically you have to right click my computer, manage, disk management listed uder storage, right click on the device or drive and change the drive letter to something like " W" or " Z" or anything not in use.

It may be a siomilar case with your bluetooth, youo may have to much stuff connected. Try redoing everything like you have so many other times before, and then limiting how many bluetooth devices you have connected at the same time. see if theres a difference.

Hope this helps.

HP Photosmart 3310 does not recognize paper in tray

This is usually do to a sensor, your correct on that, thers usually a plastic piece that indicates theres paper and its broken or worn.

The other thing is that it may be the little rubber grabber is worn and not grabbing the paper, so the printer thinks thers no paper because nothings going through. These parts can be orderd but are usually costly depending on the printer. If its under warranty, take it back.

Also, check the trey and make sure it isnt a I.D.10.T error and you just set the paper to legal or something. I've made that mistake before.
