Faxes I send are reduced in size and have series of black line down right hand side.
I am having an issue with our fax machine. whenever we copy or send a fax the person on the other end get the full fax but it is reduced in size and there is a series of long black lines on the sheet.
Does anyone know how to resolve this?

If its reduced in size during transmit or copy then simply place a letter size document in the feeder and close the two sliders up to the sides of the paper. If you don't close the slider up to the paper it will go into auto reduction

One reason why you're having a black line on the copies you make and faxes that you send it's because the scanner glass inside the fax machine is dirty. Here's what you can do to resolve you're issue.
-Make sure the printer is off and unplugged from the power outlet for your safety.
-Open the control panel, Prepare a dry lint free cloth and isopropyl alcohol, dampen the cloth with a small amount of alcohol.
-Inside the fax machine look for a the long scanner glass clean it with the dampened cloth, using hand try to feel if there are debris or dirt and concentrate on cleaning that part.
-Directly above the glass you will see a white strip clean that also with the dampened cloth
Once you're done cleaning, close the cover and plug it back in. Try to copy a blank sheet of paper and if you can still see the same line clean it again for about 3-5 times, Make sure to make a copy everytime you clean the glass.
Hope this helps!
Well you said the Lines are present when you are copying and when you are sending from the fax unit. Copying and sending functions both uses the scanning unit. What you lift open the document feeder for original documents. In there you should see rollers and a glass. clean this glass with cotton swab and alcohol for left to right the entire glass. Close the unit and try copying or sending, documents should now be clean.
if the faxes going out have the line but coming in print out clear then the glass at the document feeder is dirty and probably needs cleaning.. check under the feeder cover and look for a glass piece where the documents go in this picks up dirt and typex and when it scans the document it thinks its on the original.. a soft cloth and some glass cleaner should clean it off..
if your RECEIVED faxes look good, then leroyal is dead on. you will need a new CIS which stands for contact image sensor. if you have an authorized brother service center nearby, they may be able to do it for 100 to 150.00, depending on their pricing of course. if rec'd faxes are bad also, pull drum out and make sure the blue tab on top of drum is all the way to the right side, although that usually only leaves about a 1/2" black band.
I found the solution to my problem: Press Menu, Pound Key (#), 35 to set copy size, 36 to set fax size, press Start/Set, then use up/down arrows on right side of the machine to select 92%, 86%, 72%, or Off. Press Start/Set to select desired setting. Press Menu to exit!
DON'T KNOW IF THIS WILL HELP-BUT MY PROBLEM WAS SIMILAR--MINE WAS SAYING PAPER TOO NARROW WHEN I WAS TRYING TO PRINT AND COPY. I JUST KEPT MOVING THE FRONT SLIDER AND THE LEFT HAND SIDE SLIDERS BACK AND FORTH AND TOOK THE PAPER IN AND OUT --TRIED AGAIN AFTER EACH TIME--IT EVENTUALLY FIGURED OUT I DID HAVE THE RIGHT SIZE PAPER--
ALSO TRY---MENU--THEN--COPY SET-UP--THEN PAPER SIZE--SEE IF PAPER SIZE IS SET RIGHT.
