Question about Olivetti Lettera 25 Typewriter

2 Answers

Carriage release My olivetti lettera 22 portable typewriter was put up years ago and I would like to get it in working order again. The problem is, the carriage is locked. I've tried the tab, space and release levers and nothing helps. I removed the bottom and looked around but all I see is a little metal tab that appears to stop the carriage from moving. I am afaid to force the tab down for fear of causing more trouble. Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Mine's also jammed - slightly off-centre to the left. I've tried the same things as the other user. I also tried the solution suggested - but doesn't seem to help - the lever on the right hand side: is this the one on the same level with the carriage return lever on the left?

Try jiggling the carraige around a bit and then try using that lever thats on the right side of the carraige. you might even try both at once to see what frees it up. i had the same problem and it worked for me. That's the right tab, it may be in a jammed position so it wont open properly.

Olivetti Lettera 22 Typewriter carriage does not move

There are two ways to deal with that (before taking you olivetti to an authorized dealer):
  1. There's a lock key under the carriage. Have you unlocked it?
  2. The carriage might have been locked by a piece of paper or something else. Release it (pull it) and clean its passage (there is a button you press in order to release it - proceed with care).

There is a small lever on the right side of the machine under the carriage that is meant to lock the carriage for transport. Press this down.

Learn how to unlock the carriage in Olivetti Lettera 22 Manual posted by Ed Cornish (Carriage Locking Lever 7). It is a different machine model, but the lock/unlock mechanism might be the same.

Lettera 22 - sips and adds spaces on occassion

If it skips at the same place or skips every 10 or 12 spaces all the time it is a broken tooth on the escapement wheel or rack. It could be in typing you are lingering on the key causing it to spring back a little ans space over.

How do you unlock a locked carriage?

The solution is not right--there is a carriage return release lever on the far right of the typewriter, that engages a notch on the underside of the roller/carriage return--push it forward to release the lever and you are in business--it has a spoon shaped end and its on the right side
