Says printer cartridge access door open when closed
I just bought this printer scanner copier at a rummage sale and when i plug it in it say door open. close print cartridge access door. There is no print cartridges in it so would that be why it is saying that? I dont want to go spend alot of money on cartridges if thats not going to fix problem. Please help
No it will not complain for an open door if there is no cartridge. There will be a separate warning for no cartridge or toner not installed error. You might want to play around with the cartridge door a little and see for a possible paper stuck somewhere inside.

Turn on your HP Photosmart printer if it is not already on.
Reach under the access door handle at the front of the printer beneath the scanner and lift up on the scanner and door until the assembly locks into an open position, revealing the print carriage on the right side of the printer. If replacing a used cartridge, push down on the label of the cartridge to unlock it from the carriage and then lift it out of its slot.
Remove the new ink cartridge from its packaging--holding the cartridge by its plastic sides. Pull the pink tab covering the copper-colored contacts gently down and then remove the tape from the ink nozzles.
Align the cartridge at the front of the slot in the print carriage with the label on the cartridge pointing up. Push the cartridge into the slot until it clicks securely in place.
Close the access door by lowering it and the scanner back into position.
Make sure the printer is on. Lift the scanner unit to access the cartridge area. The print cartridge carrier moves to the center and stops at the loading position. Grasp the tabs on the cartridge lids, and then lift the lids. Remove the used cartridges and install the new ones. Snap the lids closed and lower the scanner unit to close.
Sometimes the ink cartridge carrier won't position automatically to the center even when the printer is on and the cover is open. Just unplug the printer from the power source. With the cover open, hold the solid white strip and gently slide the carrier to the middle of the printer. Load the cartridges. Close the cover. Plug the printer back to power source.
Hope this helps. Thanks.

Turn the printer on and confirm that there is paper in the tray. After the new ink cartridges are loaded, the printer will need to run an alignment test. On the front of the printer, above and to the right of the paper tray, there is an access door that swings open sideways. Open the access door. The ink cartridges will move so that they can be reached through the door.
Press both print cartridges down until they pop out of their holders. If you will have difficulty remembering each cartridge's position, remove only one at a time. Once a cartridge is popped out of its holder, it can be lifted freely through the access door.
Prepare the new ink cartridges for installation by removing them from the packaging and removing the tape from the bottom of each cartridge. Be careful not to touch the delicate metal contacts on the bottom of the cartridges.
Install the cartridges by aligning them slightly below the holders, then pushing them up and forward until they snap into place. Close the access door when you are finished. A test sheet will begin printing to check the alignment of the cartridges.
Open the lid of the scanner and place the test page face down on the scanner bed. The upper-left corner of the test page should line up with the arrow in the corner of the scanner bed.
Push the "Scan" button on the printer control panel. The scanner will scan the test page into the printer's memory, which will then be used to make any alignment adjustments that are necessary. The printer is ready to use when the test is complete

Check Paper light flashes but there isn't a paper related problem
The check paper light may also flash if there are other problems. Verify the following conditions:
Verify that the print cartridge door is closed.
The print carriage may be jammed, follow these steps to correct the problem:
Open the print cartridge access door. If the print carriage can move, it should move to center. If the print carriage stays all the way left, unplug the power cord and then plug it back in. This will reset the unit and may allow the print carriage to move from the left.
Disconnect the power cord from the all-in-one.
Remove both print cartridges.
Move the print carriage left and right slightly to verify that the print carriage will move freely. If the print carriage will not move freely, check for obstructions.
Close the print cartridge access door.
Plug the power cord back in.
After the all-in-one initializes, the print cartridge light will flash. Open the access door and install the print cartridges.
Close the print cartridge access door. If the problem returns, remove the print cartridges and wipe the electrical contacts before reinstalling them.
Try to make a copy. If the all-in-one pulls in paper but cannot make a copy, there may be a problem with the scanner mechanism. Contact HP for assistance.
