This has happened twice now - I save my game and turn the machine off as normal, but then when I turn it back on my game data is gone! is there any way to get it back or is it gone forever? Also, how do I stop this happening?
Well, when you erase a game file from an n64 cartridge, the file itself is not erased, all that happens is the game marks it as an empty file and available to use; but all the bits and content that make up your saved game file are still there. It may just be the system is having a hard time reading the data stored or is failing to recognize it.

your board basically has to be angled up slightly and not leaning too far in either direction. too far back, you fall. too far forward, you fall. too far leaned to the left or right...fall.

64's as they get older and with most gaming consoles the connections get worn. The power supply is junk on those! It's a cube that has to fit just right into the slot to make a solid connection. Here's a possible solution.
1.Turn off your 64 and pull out the power supply cube blow on it and in the space where it was.
2.Take the game out blow on it.
3. When you put the game in push it down a little harder than normal "not very hard dont break it" but securing the connection this way.Do the same with the power supply.

The backup battery in the cartridge appears to be dead. You'll have to replace it to get the save data to stay when power isn't on.
