Call the carrier the phone is locked to and request an unlock code. you can usually get a free unlock code this way. if you cannot do that and need to purchase one you can get a free htc unlock code here: http://gsmunlocklabs.com/htc-unlock-code/

Hi, You can unlock your HTC ORBIT safer and easier using unlock code. You can get the unlock code for a HTC ORBIT from www.wickedunlock.com/htc-orbit/rs11wp9/ at affordable cost.
Here are the steps for unlocking a HTC ORBIT,
1. Switch ON your HTC Orbit with a Not ACCEPTED SIM Card.
2. If your HTC Orbit asks for a PIN code, then enter your SIM card PIN and press OK.
3. HTC Orbit will ask to enter an "unlock code".
4. Enter Unlock Code we send to you.
5. Your HTC Orbit is now unlocked.

Firstly make sure you have fully backed up your phone including the SD card as unlocking will completely reset you phone & wipe the SD Card. remove SD Card if possible, if it's a built in SD Card connect phone to PC via USB & make a copy of it. I can't stress this enough unlocking bootloader & rooting will cause you to lose all the data on your phone & reset it back to Factory Condition.

Unfortuantely, due to the way the 3 network operates, it is not possible to use it with the 3 network. An unlocked XDA Orbit will work with all network SIMs other than the network 3 (Hutchingson 3G)
