Nikon d40x ( error. press shutter release button again. )
The manual (pg 112) simply, and unfortunately, states this message "Press shutter release button again. If error persists, consult with Nikon-authorized service representative".
Some questions that might help: have you had the camera in some extreme conditions, damp, sand, etc. Clean the shutter button really well. Maybe use a small air blower and clean in the shutter release creases.
In the end, if the error continues, it will need to be serviced.

Took my camera to Best Buy (Geek Squad), They sent it off to a camera repair shop. Got a call yesterday. They had to replace the shutter and SQ baseplate unit. Cost $105.41. Thought it would be a lot higher. Better than buying another camera.
This says 8 days old, most of these replies are MUCH older, lol. Can you email me at [email protected] and let me know if you were having the same issue? I took my camera to a local camera shop and they said they don't know what's wrong with it and that I have to send it to Nikon. I can drop it off at Best Buy. I'm about to go buy a new camera (Nikon D5000 because I simply can't be without a camera for however long this will take and Costco has an amazing deal right now) However, I am still in love with my D40x and am hoping I can get it fixed for a decent price that way if I am simply not satisfied with the new camera I can return it. Please get at me, thanks! :)

I have the same problem, I have never exposed my camera to harsh conditions, I have treated it like a new born baby from day one, no drops, no knocks, nothing and the thing that really gets me is that it is 20 days out of warranty. Not that that matters as Nikon warranty is only valid for the country the camera was purchased and I bought mine while on holiday in the US. I have just heard back from the repair shop and apparently the main circuit board is blown which has also affected the flash circuit board. Wonderful ! Its going to cost about half the price of a new body to repair it.
I have the same problem with my shutter sticking. I sent it to nikon because it was within the one year warranty. Nikon sent it back and said they will not fix it because it was not a US product. I bought the camera from a shop, brand new, in NY. Not happy at all with Nikon response. Any one know how much this might cost to fix??
when i take a photo it takes and stops then on the screen it reads Error . Press Shutter release button again. after pressing it I look at the photo and the top half is black and the bottom half is the bottom of the image i took. any help trying to fix this problem would be great. Thanks Much
