L100 john deere runs but has erradic idle, okay when blades engaged???

I can get it to start and run but once it is warm the idle revs up and down, i have tried to mess with air fuel adjuster but if I screw that in too much the idle stays high.... possible carb issue?

Never mess with the air adjuster .. If it was set correctly once It should never need messing with. Now you have another variable to the problem. More then likely the fuel Jet has some obstruction in it. Drop the fuel bowl and take the Jet out and clean it.

SOURCE: 2305 john deere, idle runs slow in full idle.

Look at the fuel filter bowl on the rear of the engine right hand side to see if you can see a red ring raised up slightly from the bottom of the bowl.If you can see the ring then there is water in the fuel[or ice by now]You will need to take of the filter and get the water out of the filter bowl by taking it indoors to thaw. Before removing the filter bowl, turn off the fuel, petcock is just above and to the rear of the filter.Once the water is out you then need to clean the bowl out and re-install with a new filter.Pick up a product called "diesel melt" at the dealership and add it to your fuel for the rest of the cold season{follow the instruction on the bottle}.If this is not the case then the linkage on the injection pump may need to be adjusted to get the rpm up to no more than 2450 rpm..

SOURCE: John Deere will not start.

If you have gas running down to the carberator ( take the fuel line off and make sure there is gas running to it or there may be a screen or filter plugged by the tank or on the way to the carb) if there is gas there the problem lies in the carb itself. If you have some mechanical ability you should be all right as it is not rocket science. If you are comfortable with taking the carb apart the first thing i would check is the needle vavle. With the carb apart you will see a big brass looking thing this is the float, right above that is the neddle valve, that is the first place they seem to stick on me. Move the float up and down if the neddle above it doesn't move or sticks there is your problem. Spray it with carb cleaner and see if it moves freely. You may have to dismantle the carb to get it to work freely. If it won't buy a carb kit and install all the new gaskets needle valves and jets ( this is a very good ideal any how) Also make sure any little ports in the carb are open ( in the bottom of the carb there may be tiny little holes that are plugged) find a very small wire to clean them with and also make sure when you are done you can spray carb cleaner thru them. This is why they have a small straw on the can with it ( watch your eyes and wear safety glasses as you never know where it will spray out from) That stuff will dry your skin out fast so don't get it in your eyes and you may want to wear rubber gloves. Also be very careful when putting back together as there are little pieces that like to slide around and fall out or may get bent even worse you don't want them in your motor. Also try to count every screw you turn as these are jets and you will want to put them back to the place they were set at cause it's a pain to get them set right by adjusting them later. Do not force anything putting it back as you may bend the jets or float and you will have to take it apart again and replace them as well. Take your time and be patient and you will be just fine

Testimonial: "thanks...you gave me encouragement to give it a try. I took off the shroud, air cleaner box and couldn't take off the carb as there are no heads on the four bolts that hold it on. Looks like it was designed not to be removed? I took off an inspection plate on top of the carb and cleaned all of the channels and ports within with carb cleaner and compressed air...still no gas flowing thru carb...unless I force with compressed air. Any other thoughts? It is a twin cylinder OHV B/S. Thank you. "

When it dies loosen the fuel cap and see if it will start. If it starts its because the tiny vent hole in the fuel cap is plugged.

SOURCE: John Deere 318 blades won't engage once it gets hot.

Check the clutch gap in the front of the machine (the one that engages the belt) by tightening or loosening three lock nuts around clutch. Tightening decreases gap/ loosening increases gap. Note: do not tighten too far as it will result in clutch drag or lockup! Stop when its just starting to touch then back off slightly. Also without a proper charge on the battery the magnetic power for the clutch is altered and not strong enough to engage clutch when hot. Find out why battery light is on.

John Deere X304 PTO Engagement Problem When Warm

Hi, check your belt tension, check all idler pulleys and drive pulleys for free rotation with the belt off and finally check that the belt is not bottoming out in any of the drive pulleys. If so, replace the belt. The blades should come up to speed imediately wether hot or cold and it sounds like your belt is slipping in one or more of the pulleys which drags the motor revs down until it grips. Regards Phil.
