SOURCE: Grundig Satellit 500 "Radio Boy"

Hi,

Offhand, can you pls try and do a reset. This model don't have a reset button, but you can try removing the batteries for say an hour or so. The idea is to reset the microprocessor if the problem is software/firmware. Preset/memory would be erased as well as any personalized settings if you do this. But the unit will be back to factory default.

If the reset doesn't work, then your particular version/model has a slight offset resulting to the "humming sound". This is a known problem and many in the "ham" world have written corrective procedures which would require an insulated tuning/alignment screwdriver or at the very least a jewellers screwdriver and doing a bit of alignment by "ear"

If you are adventurous to give this a try, pls post back. Otherwise your best bet would be to seek the services of a qualified ham radio technician.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

SOURCE: Problem with FM reception.

Sony radios of this era had notorious capacitor problems.... also several other brands were affected. These capacitors were underrated and the technology to make them was not at it's best back then. The cure is to replace the capacitors on the board with new electrolytics. About 28 of them need to be replaced but the big problem is to find someone to do this. the original capacitors are surface mount and must be removed and new radial lead caps put in their place, some are rather tough to get at and the new ones have to be placed carefully. My SONY ICF-SW7600 now works as new and maybe even better!
I have done this myself as I have skills working with surface mount capacitors. I offer my services to those who cannot find service for their radios. Please email me for details, I am not into making bucks on this, I just want to see these radios kept working and bringing enjoyment to their owners.

Radio Shack can get you an antenna, or a long wire (or wire coat hanger actually works too)

Have a bose wave and live in a metal building. Can't get hardly any am fm radio recept. 3.5 mm antena jack. Can I get an am fm antenna? And do I need to mount antenna outside?

The Bose has the option for external antenna, but uses the AC cord as the antenna, so first try stretching your AC cord to its fullest extent in a straight line, then in different directions to see if that improves the situation. This is for FM only. The AM uses an internal ferrite rod antenna, and this is sensitive to direction, so try rotating the radio in different directions to see if signal improves on AM, and place unit as near a window as possible.

If none of this helps, you will be able to use an external antenna, and no it is not mandatory that they be mounted outside ... as long as you have room indoors. In fact, several manufacturers market indoor antennas for apartment dwellers and others under restrictions against mounting antennas outdoors.

But, logically, the best way to improve reception is the largest antenna mounted as high up and as far away from obstructions between the antenna and transmitter as possible.

Good luck.

Eton e5 sw shot

The SW FET preamp transistor, Q1, on the underside of the circuit board blows if a static electric discharge hits the whip antenna. In my case, a cat rubbing against me & the radio on a very dry winter day did it in. The back & circuit board has to be removed to get at it. The micro transistor & the solder connection are very tiny, so hard to replace. The antenna jack should still work, because the preamp is only for the whip antenna's SW reception. An easier solution would be to just run a wire from the antenna jack to the whip antenna, but you would no longer have the whip's preamp benefits, or just use a longwire antenna connected to the jack for SW. Also beware plugging into the jack disables the AM ferrite antenna inside, so you might not want anything plugged into it for AM reception because the internal ferrite seems to perform better than any external antenna.

I have lots of motor noise. when i unplug antenna it stops

The motor noise comes through power wires and antenna pickup. Get an old ferrite bar out of an old junk AM radio. That black bar with wire wound on it inside AM/FM radios. Tape it to your Antenna coax or try to add 2 of them. Just tape them to the coax at about 6" inches from your radio. Try to add a power wire filter to the RED(+) 12 volt wire and Black wire(-) to your radio. A power filter is just a Ferrite bead or small bar with about 10 wounds of wire and a 470uf capacitor from (+) to ground(black -). Make sure polarity on capacitor is wired (+)(-) that way too. Radio Shack has a "Power" line noise filter kit, that hooks up under your dash. Ask Radio Shack personnel about this they will help you locate a "noise filter" for noisy alternators. Its simple, also, your radio is doing a fine job if it picks up that sensitive through the antenna. That just shows you your antenna is doing a good job. I had a problem like that --I only talked on my CB with the ignition turned off though, it made since to park and talk.

We have a Grundig S350DL radio that was my father's. There is no manual. FM works great. Can't get AM. Radio turns off on its own!! Any suggestions?

Hello,
The problem you are having may be due to some configuration settings (such as a timer). Not dtecting the AM signal, may be due to interference from power lines. To improve AM reception (if there is something to improve) one should rotate the radio to orient the internal ferrite antenna. Using the radio close to a window can improve reception.
To enable you to diagnose the problems that may be due to some configuration setting I give you the link to the radio's manual.

Hope it helps.

AM/FM stereo receiver often fully "drops" the reception of listened to radio station(s), or reception will often decrease in volume. Repositioning of the receiver's connected antenna wire often has no...

Possible solution. I have fixed two with this problem. When the radio drops to a hard surface, the ferrite coil antenna is the heaviest component on circuit board. Look for cracks in solder or broken wires where attachments to circuit board occurs for this component. Use a fine point soldering iron with low heat.

Excessive static on AM stations. Waves in and out. Not so on car radio. Is there an antenna to eliminate this?

Turn on the radio and turn the AM/SW BAND switch to the AM position. MW appears in the display. Use the outer ‘fast’ tuning knob to find stations, fine tuning with the inner ‘slow’ knob
when needed.

• If there is interference from adjacent stations, place the BAND WIDTH control in the NARROW position. If there is no interference, leave it in the WIDE position.

• If there is excess background noise, turn on
the SW LPF switch, which may minimize the noise.

• If a station is so strong that audio distortion occurs, reduce the gain level with the AM/SW RF GAIN control knob by turning it counterclockwise.

• The telescopic antenna does not have to be extended for AM reception. The radio has an internal, directional, ferrite-bar antenna for AM reception.

• To optimize AM reception, swivel the radio until maximum signal strength is achieved.

All of that being said: It's very tough nowadays to receive AM in this 2008 electronic world. If your able install a longwire SW antenna outside, and have access to a good earth ground, you can boost the AM signals and beat the noise being generated all around you.

AM reception

Hello,
If the internal antenna is broken that means the ferrite bar is broken, that does imply that the wiring around it is cut. If the two parts are not removed, the antenna may still be able to perform correctly (just as two magnets put end to end). You can try to put it in the vicinity of another radio to see if there is any resonance effect.
Hope it helps.

Crank handle broken

MicheleMc, May be too late to help you but maybe someone else is looking for the same information. Finding the manufacturers web site is difficult since their name is Eton. Anyway to get support on these excellent radios go to the Customer Support web page http://www.etoncorp.com/CustomerSupport and from the left hand frame and click on the *Warranty Repair* or ?Non-Warranty Repair? link depending on your case. This will generate a web form you fill in and send. From past experience someone contacted me within a day or two and my repaired unit was back in a couple of weeks. The support site also has links to manual downloads, FAQs and a parts (common) listing page. Hope this helps someone and please don?t forget to rate the post.
