MY NEC NR 7900A CD-RW Burner cd rom will not recognize disks that have be rewritten (burned). It will recognize audio cd's that I have for example bought in a record shop. When i placed a burned cd into the cd room it makes noises as if its recognizing the cd then abruptly makes a *click" sound..it repeatedly does this...unti a point when I guess it marks the cd as unreadable. Is this a device defect? My comp is a dell inspiron, approx 6 years old.
This does sound like a defective drive, most likely a laser / reader issue, because the refractive properties of the CDR is different from a "pressed" disk it looks like thia failed TOC seek issue, the head starts at the center of the disk and reads outwards, the click noise is most likeley the head reaching the terminus (the outer limit of the motorised movement), the drive then unable to find the TOC gives up and decides the disk is unreadable. if this drive is within the manufacturer's Warrantee period I would reccommend sending it back.
