THE FAN IN THE OUTDOOR UNIT DOES NOT WORK WHILE THE AC IS ON

  • jv1492 Jan 10, 2009

The fan of my outdoor unit does not turn on. I open the side panel and manually push a little "plastic square" thing and the fan spins that way. But not when the thermostat kicks in. However, the unit in my attic turns on and blows air, but not cold air. I saw a suggestion about replacing the motor or the fan. However, since it works manually, might that still mean that the moto is damaged?

These motors are famous for the inyernal fuse blowing in the fan motor. check continuity between the red and blac wires. if there is non the fuse is gone. These motors are fairly easy to take apart and change the fuse . hope this helps

Fault may be just the fan. check if stiff to rotate for starters and then check continuity thro it

03 grand am ac wont blow cold air

Two things are very likely to be your problem. Freon or compressor. Turn on the ac on cold and see if the compressor is engaging, if it is and stops and goes or if it doesn't. try to check the compression on the low side of your ac, the smallest plug where you service the ac. Or take it to an ac professional to get it refilled or checked. Remember, just because its blowing air, it doesn't mean its working. There are fans inside the car that push the cold air inside your vehicle and most of the time these will work, but that's not the only part required to blow cold air inside your car, the compressor is what makes the air cold.

I just replaced the fan and the capastitor on an outside air conditioner unit yesterday. Today it was blowing so cold I increased the temp. on the thermostat. Now it is blowing 77 degrees air instead of...

The air being blown at the condensing unit isn't the air that blows inside. I seriously doubt what you said about it getting so cold. I believe that the wires to the capacitor were improperly installed, and your compressor isn't operating. Don't confuse the outdoor fan operation with compressor operation (they both share the same contactor as a switch). On the capacitor, the brown wire connects to fan, compressor attaches to "HERM" common attaches to the contactor. I didn't mention the colors of the common or compressor wires because they differ among manufacturers.

check power to outside unit, check if it has a fused disconnect, if you have power and no blown fuses it could be a blown capicator that starts the fan and compressor...............

AC is on but the air isnt cold

You may not have all components working, check to make sure the outdoor fan is working. Also listen closely to ascertain that the compressor is coming on,

Uotside unit blowing cool air but hot on the inside

It sounds like you have a unit called a heat pump. When a heat pump unit is in cooling mode the outside unit blows hot air and the inside unit blows cold air. If the outside unit is blowing cold then the indoor unit is most likely blowing room temperature or warm air. It sounds like the thermostat could be controlling incorrectly or you could have a failed reversing valve which is the device that switches the unit from heating to cooling mode.

It simply wont turn on

a thought is , exactly what wont turn on? the indoor blower? the outdoor fan or the outdoor compressor?. be specific for goodness sakes. i assume you mean the ac wont turn on since its cold here in fla. dont know where you are since you didnt say. if it blows but not cold then outdoor unit is problem. if air out side being discharged is cool then compressor isnt running. check caps and volts through contactor. if ok check power directly into compressor. if ok the look at amps etc.
