This can be caused by several different situations. Most commonly the camera has experienced some kind of impact which knocks an element out of alignment, preventing the lens from rotating normally. Symptoms of this include: *you may hear no mechanical sound at all when the camera is turned on *you may see visibly mis-aligned components of the lens *you may hear a loud "snap snap" sound as the camera tries to move the lens when the camera is powered on The second most common cause is a particle of sand getting stuck in the focus motor drive gears. This prevents the focus element from moving normally and causes the camera to shut off to prevent damage to the lens assembly. Symptoms of this include: *A loud "buzzing" sound when the camera is turned on, followed by the beeping and shutdown. Finally the third most common cause of this problem is a broken tooth on the zoom motor drive gears. Symptoms of this include: *the sound of the running motor with a regular "click click click" sound for several seconds. This will not be a "snap snap" sound, that is a different problem. *the lens will move in and out easily by hand as if free from any resistance. All of these problems require disassembly to repair. The charge is around $125 labor at my shop.

Please help - my lens will not come out, once I switch on my camera. It comes up with an E18 message Vicky

Hi,
E18 error means that the lens mechanism is jammed and the lens cannot extend/retract.

Follow the steps provided below to solve this problem.

Remove the batteries from the camera, wait for 10 minutes, then put them back in and turn the camera on.If this does not work then try the compressed air. With a fine tip blow off gun and dry compressed air set the tip between the lens turret and the camera body and turn on the air while moving the tip around the lens. It should remove all dust and sand. Turn the camera on and it should function as fine.If this also does not work then you need to force the lens out .

Hope this helps.
Thanks for using Fixya.

When I turn on my PowerShot A70, it comes on and immediately shuts itself off and the Error E18 appears on the screen.

Canon Powershot's error E18 has to do with the lens:
If it appears on a black LCD with E18 written on the corner, it is mostly due to the lens getting stuck while trying to extend. The camera will beep a few times and the LCD will display a little E18 in the lower-left corner. The lens gets stuck in the extended position, and refuses to move either to focus the lens or to retract when powered off.
I am giving below a link which will help you with E18 problem.

E18 error on Canon ixus40 - lens stuck

The E18 error is an error message on Canon digital cameras. The E18 error occurs when anything prevents the zoom lens from properly extending or retracting.[1] The error has become notorious in the Canon user community as it can completely disable the camera, requiring expensive repairs.
A quick internet search for "E18" + "canon" quickly reveals hundreds of similar complaints.
ConsumerAffairs.com reports that the "lens has a feature called bellows claw, which is a gear that physically extends and retracts the lens. A piece that holds the lens, the barrier plate, is not large enough and can sometimes cause the bellows claw to malfunction, resulting in a stuck lens". The result is a black screen that only contains the error message, E18. Another problem mentioned on the site blames a sticky iris in the lens, caused by grease entering inside from the microphones built into the lens. The buildup freezes up the ability of the lens to open.

Nikon 600 suddenly comes up as Error, press shutter release button. NOTHING ELSE HAPPENS - The cammera plays back slide shows etc. It is a Nikon DXSWMVR lens

Since this is a recent camera, you may want to consider sending it to Nikon, because it may still be under a warranty.

What kind of error? E18? System error? Or a number error? These errors will tell you what the general problem is. Even though you may know the error, that will not tell the whole problem.

For instance, a lens error of E18, simply tells you there is a problem with the lens. That can mean a lot of things in that area.

E18

The following blog outlines some repair options for an E18 lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html

It's important that you fix the E18 error first, as the blur of colors may be symproms of a failing CCD. If so, Canon would fix this for you for free IF the camera has no other problems (ie no E18 lens error). Please see the following info:

Hi, I have a Canon IXUS 40 digital camera - My lens suddenly does not want to close and show me an E18 error code on screen - what is the problem?

Hey there johans, the E18 error code indicates there is a problem with your lens unit or lens cover. It was probably the result of an impact of some sort, or you may have something such as sand or dirt jammed in the device. If you cant see anything to clear and clean away, try turning off the camera and restarting. If this doesn't reset it and allow it to function properly, then you will need to bring it in for service.

Screen is showing E18

The E18 error message relates to a problem with the zooming mechanism (lens would not retract or extended) Press the power button on and hold it down while extending and twisting the telescopic zoom lens. It might fix you problem. In any case it could not make it worse Good luck!
