The player needs a firmware update. Your issue is a direct result of this. Go to the Samsung website to access the appropriate download or simply connect your player to your modem with an ethernet cable (TV needs to remain connected to player for menu navigation) and update firmware.
Blue ray uses a blue laser spectrum and DVD uses the red spectrum. The blueray player must have dual capability to play both red and blue spectrum discs. If it has been and is broken, contact the manufacturer for the 1 year warranty. If it has never played DVD then most likely its not compatible.
Connect the ethernet cable to the backside of the samsung bluray 1500 player ethernet connection with the bluray player power on with no disk & it will automatically update your bluray. It should be work fine after update your bluray. Good Luck!
If you are trying to use the remote that came with the dvd player you most likely can't get it to work with the TV.
If it IS in fact a universal remote, then you need to check the codes that come both with the tv and with the remote.
