Compaq Presario R3000 Sound card problem - I tap on PC to fix

I have a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop.  The sound and microphone will stop working at times.  I found that if I tap the lower right side of the laptop (where the controls and microphone jack is), I can get it working again.
Question:  Is this a part that can be easily replaced or is it built into the motherboard?  Appreciate any help.

I have install window xp professional sp2 in notebook compaq presario v3424TU. i have installed the sound drivers but the sound still not coming. thell me the way follow to

Hey mate,

You should look for an external audio card maybe some of the capacitators and transistors in your built in sound device have ceased.

Check the web for external sound card for your notebook.

You have a great night.

Do advise on the results.

Compaq laptop

Hi

The sound card drivers are most likely missing / not installed.
You can download them from the HP/compaq website

Compaq Presario R3000 Sound card follow-up question

The sound board is connected to the mainboard by a connector and contra-connector, both soldered to their boards.. If you want to do it right, you will have to remove several screws from that bottom corner and left side, under the battery too, so that you can lift up the mainboard's corner (gently!) a bit, and put in back in place firmly. It is located just above the top left side of the battery compartment, when looking at the bottom with the front toward you. A more durable option is to take the bugger apart, and put washers max. 1mm thick under the soundboard to get a better snap-in on those connectors.

Compaq Presario R3000 dim screen but not dark

Sounds like the auto-dim in the BIOS is set too low. Fortunately the Compaq R3000 allows you to adjust the brightness right from the keyboard. Hold down the [FN] function key while tapping the [F8] key will brighten the screen, while [FN]-[F7] will dim it. The settings are different for running on AC power and battery, so you must do each individually.

External microphone not working

Check first if your sound card is working properly.

My Computer >> Right click...Properties >> hardware >> Device manager >> Sound

Then go to Start >> Control Panel >> Sound and Audio Devices .........hit ADVANCED

one dialog appears MASTER VOLUME >> Go to OPTIONS >> Then PROPERTIES..........

CHECK the MICROPHONE...........Hit OK.............

This will be fixing your problem (if your sound card is working well)
