Try pressing and holding the menu button for 15 seconds! That should unlock the controls! Regards, babb

FYI....The lock you see indicates that the OSD(On Screen Display) is locked! Which is a feature builtin to the monitor to prevent accidentally changing settings, You can lock and unlock at anytime by holding the menu button for 15secs, if that doesn't work something might be wrong with some internal board on your monitor and you should
take it to a tech for troubleshooting!

Main Menu and lock cymbol keep coming on screen. How do I get rid of them?

Wendy ohlsen, I know you really like your E173FP, but it is quite "old" in CCFL back-lit lcd display years. It could be 4 to 6 years old. Retrevo .com lists unit as "time to retire" ,, Please reply back with the "date of manufacture" from rear of unit. Tell me if unit has a "lay on floor" power adapter or just a plain old "line cord" that plugs into the wall. When "strange stuff" starts to appear on screen, problem is most likely inside the unit on the power supply board. Let me know if your husband or boyfriend can assist you with an internal visual investigation of unit's power supply board. See YOUTUBE video clips of repairs being done on typical Dell units first. Pay particular attention to BAD CAPACITORS being replaced with new ones!!! 12fixlouie

Large black line at the bottom of the desktop - about one inch wide. Windows opens above the frame of the desktop.

you need to change the aspect ratio or position of the screen using the menu and buttons on the monitor

LCD Main MEnu

hi,

It is possible that menu button on the monitor is stuck. I suggest to call your computer manufacturer where you purchased the monitor, check for the warranty and request for a replacement.

Keep me posted.

Thanks

Dell E173FP LCD Monitor

Yes, it does appear as if there is a loose connection somewhere inside, or a faulty IC chip. However, I wouldn't recommend opening it up, as there can be any number of reasons why this can be happening, and if you have no prior experience, there is no point opening it up. I recommend getting it serviced, or purchase a new monitor...whichever works out cheaper for you.

E173FP 17" LCD Monitor Problem

I have the same problem. It seems like a virus to me, but my anti-virus doesn't find anything. I went to the main menu on the moniter and changed the display time to five seconds and locked the OSD display. Now all the appears is a smaller box showing a lock which goes out in five seconds. It is still annoying, but less intrusive then before. Hopefully, some one will determine a permanent fix for this problem.

Dell E173FP - After sometime the screen switches off

Sorry not a solution - but I have started experiencing the exact same problem over the last month although sometimes, on switching on again, it will run for 10-15 minutes before the problem re-emerges. Initially I put it down to the v. hot weather in July but it still continues. So I would also appreciate any solutions!
