Ok somewhere there has been a fault which has rendered it unreadable in windows, but info still can be pulled off via a Linux Live disc, that is a small operating system like windows that will run off a cd or flash drive, once up and running you can access the hard drive and copy all info to another, then when back in windows you can re formatt and send all info back, I know it sounds a little hard but it is not.
Cheers
I have to say the other suggestions all point to a reformat without retrieving the lost data, I have had this problem with several drives and I have always retrieved 100 percent of data using a Linux live disc to move the contents of the drive to another drive, the faulty drive can the be re formatted in windows and all data can be transferred back all without losing data, I also point out that Mitul has not read your problem as if were read correctly you state you had been using the drive previously, something Mitul failed to notice. The alignment tool will not save your data

Welcome to Fixya
If you already tried connecting the drive to a different computer and get same result, this could be a harddrive problem already. To test further, try to replace the USB cable of the harddrive if you have spare one. If same thing occurs after replacing usb cable, then the harddrive is already dead.

How do I format the external hard drive on a Macintosh computer?
To format the drive for MAC OSX
1. Connect the drive to your computer.
2. Open Disk Utility. (Applications folder > Utilities folder > Disk Utility). Select the hard drive in the left hand column and click on the Erase tab.
3. In the Volume Format drop-down menu, select Mac OS Extended *.
4. Once you have selected the format and have named the drive, click on Erase. You will be presented with a 'Are you Sure' dialog.
5. The drive will format and upon completion will be available for use.
Note: * For the best performance, we recommend using Mac OS Extended format. However, if you will be transferring files between a Windows system and a Macintosh, format the drive as MS-DOS (FAT32) or use a program such as MediFour
