Yes a flow switch will shutdown your hot tub for self preservation. The reason your hot tub is not starting up could be a number of things. The first thing I would check is if you could have an air lock.

When you refill your hot tub always make sure to release any air in the suction line. You will not be able to prime your pump with an air lock present.

To remove an air lock simply open a union before the pump to release the air.

Here is a link to an article that talks about air locks and a few other ideas and repairs for a hot tub that is not running properly.

Is the board getting power, is the control lighting up?
Do you see any error codes on the top side control?
Improper flow will give you an error code, caused by flow issues or a faulty flow switch. Make sure all gate valves are open and the water can flow freely.
If not then check your Hi Limit sensor. This is the overheat safety sensor if it fails the tub will not function at all.

Water intake does not stop

there is a pressure sensitive control that is activated by a small tube running from the bottom of the tub up to the top of the machine
as the water in the tub rises ,air that is trapped exerts pressure on a diaphragm in the sensor
the pressure is set by your selection of the wash load /level
when that pressure is reached the sensor pressure is overcome and the switch is activated . as a result the inlet water solenoid is shut off and the wash program starts
now knowing how it works , check for the small hose is not full of water when the tub is empty, the hose is intact and not cracked or broken and the pressure switch is operational ( disconnecting the hose at the tub and blowing air into it ( like blowing up a balloon) will activate the switch
if that is working ,the next point ti check is the solenoid that switches of the tap water with the machine on as if you are doing a wash the water will start to flow . blow into the tube and the switch should shut off the water flowing into the tub and start the wash cycle
if the machine starts to wash but the water still flows then it is the solenoid that is faulty
fix is a replacement unit

The water level selector of my whirlpool white magic-splash washing machine is causing problem..it does not stop the water at the desired level..the water keeps on flowing into the tub and then overflows...

PRESSURE SWITCH
Your pressure switch stops the water and allows it to start the next cycle. It's a switch either in the control panel or at the top of the tub with a small tube connected to it which goes down between the inner and outer tub. As the water level increases the air in the tube is compressed until there is enough pressure to "make the switch" stopping the water from filling. This tube can get clogged and the switch won't work. Remove the tube and clean it out. Blowing on the tube when it's still connected to the switch will make the switch if it's working and clear.

Water inlet valve

If it fills with water and starts the cycle and the water keeps running in then your water inlet valve on the back where the water supply comes in is sticking. It needs replacing.

My whirlpool stopped making ice cubes , water dispenser is o.k. and water to ice cube pan (rubber tube) won't stop running (leaking)

You are going to have to check the water solenoid to see if it is operating correctly. The solenoid operates from the AC power through a micro switch on the rotating cam. When the switch operates the solenoid is jerked out and allows water to flow. When the switch opens (timed to fill up the ice tray) spring pressure snaps the solenoid shut blocking the water flow. If the solenoid valve sticks in the open or partially open position, it allows water to leak by.

I put in a load. The machine filled up but did not stop filling. The dial did not proceede to next step, it stayed at the 10. Overflowing EVERYWHERE. When we moved the dial manually to spin, it drained...

your fill switch is either bad or "gllitched" and the timer cannot move until this switch senses the right amount of water for the load unless its an electronically sensed water/load capacity filled machine, when it starts, the water fills the unit and the pressure switch shuts the water fill off when at selected water level and powers the timer to continue the wash cycle,it works off a "bellows" on air pressure to change a switch by air pressure to operate the machine when full of water

Won't stop filling to agitate

You may have a defective water level switch in the back of the control panel or the tube running up to the switch from the outer tub bottom may be damaged causing an air leak (which operates the switch when rising water in the tub increases the air pressure in the tube). This switch must operate before the cycle will continue. Hope this helps!

I overloaded my Ultimate Care II - it filled with water, but then shut off. I took half of the load out and was able to do the whole load. Now I am trying to do another load (much smaller), but it shuts...

The first thing to do is unplufg the unit from the mains power and let it stand for 30 minutes. Then plug it back in and start a program again. If the error persists then it should provide you wit h an error codeand will most likely be a faulty level sensor (which is a pressure sensor) and will need replacing or it will be a faulty controller or faulty wiring (see below).

The roor is most likely being seen as a No water detected entering machine or Pressure switch trip not detected. If after 30 seconds the control does not detect water entering machine and then valves will be turned off and the error code will be displayed.
Or
If the control has turned the water valves on and after 8 minutes the flow meter has detected 10.5 gallons of water passing through it, but has not detected the pressure switch trip, the valves will be turned off and the error code will flash annd the machine will not operate.
Do the following:

Press PAUSE/CANCEL twice to clear the display.
  • If there is no water in the unit:
    1. Make sure that both valves at the water source(s) are turned on all the way.
    2. Check for plugged or kinked inlet hoses or plugged screens in the inlet valves
    3. Verify inlet valve operation
  • If there is water in the unit:
    1. Verify Drain pump operation
  • Make sure thatthe filter, outlet hose and drain pump are clear of debris, obstructions and thoroughly clean.
    2. Pressure Switch Hose is in good condition and properly connected to Tub and Pressure switch
  • Verify there is not a siphon problem and thatthe outlet hose is at the correct level of 36 or more inches from the ground.
  • Verify wire harness connections to:Inlet Valves, Pressure Switch, Drain Pump, Flow Meter, and Central Control Unit (CCU)
  • Check all hoses for possible leaks
  • Verify pressure switch operation
  • Verify flow meter operation
  • Verify CCU operation

Keeps filling with water

The water level in a washing machine is determined by the pressure switch. The switch is located behind the load selector, water level, load size (has various names depending on model and manufacturer) knob on the operator console. If the switch malfunctions, the water will not shut off and the washer will overflow.

Now...before assuming the switch is defective, a common problem that occurs is the small air hose on the pressure switch coming loose or leaking. This air hose attaches from the wash tub to the pressure switch. The pressure swtich senses the change in air pressure as the tub fills and shuts the water off at the selected level. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r762094-washer_overflows

To access your pressure switch, unplug the washer and open the operator console. Look for a clear plastic hose. If it is NOT attached, you may have found your problem. Reconnect and test operate.

If it IS attached, check the entire length of the hose all the way to the wash tub for any cracks of leaks. In addition, remove the electrical connection(s) and check for corrosion. Clean if necessary.

If all these preliminary steps don't solve your problem, replace your pressure switch. Read through the link I provided and let me know if you have any questions. I hope you find this information helpful.
