Question about GE 31GT740 31" TV

GE 31GT740 We need help. TV will turn start cycling thru channels. Before we had fios tv it would even change the cable channel. Now it cycles--sometimes slowly but most times rapidly. Then it will turn itself on and off. Now have the TV on an extension cord with on/off switch. It was turning itself on no matter if cable box is on or not. Took it in for service and the repair place kept it for a month. Did none of the described actions. We got it back and it did not do it's poltergist routine for two months. It then did it for a month and stopped. Eight months later it started again. Moved the TV to a different location in the house. Thought maybe someone had a computer router. Same actions. Would love to get it fixed or should I call the Salvation Army to pick up? We have had the set since Jan 2003.

You may have a sticking button on your front control panel. Sometimes they become intermittent and cause crazy things to happen. I've found this in RCA tv's and GE's are made by the same manufacture. Stargazer

I have a GE guide+ gemstar model 31GT740 i cant get cable reception the cable is fine as i hooked them to another tv and it worked fine i did auto channel and it scanned all channels when it was done it...
your have problem with the system IC's which store the channel and all the control in the TV or it can be remedy by soldering the pin of the IC's if the problem persist well your have to replace that system.

My tv turns itself on and then starts going thru the channel and when it is on will start changing channels?
Assuming your TV continuously changes channels on its own in the upward direction, I had the same problem with my GE 31GT740 TV and fixed myself. GE will give you the runaround and have you calling RCA who has no clue. The cure is simple but, you need someone to help you move the set around. Remove the rear cover by taking out all of the screws – obviously unplug the set first. Then remove the large circuit board by taking the two screws out from the underside. The TV will need to be laid down on the screen side so have a large pillow or blanket laid out. The main circuit board has two side stops that hold it in and then pry it a little. The entire board slides out and you can set it aside. Now, remove the front switch panel assy by depressing the two side stops. Then the circuit board behind the switches can now be removed from the assy. The third button in from the center is the ‘up channel button’. Pry off the small switch soldered to the board behind the ‘up channel button’. Reassemble and the problem will be fixed. In other words, the ‘up channel’ button on the TV set has gone bad.

The who input button
usually a tv that doesn't "see" video on the S-video will not even "switch" to it.  It just goes to the next Svideo, RCA etc..  
Make sure your cable is not damaged. (on both ends) Does the svideo source and svideo cable work with another tv or video device?
31GT740 Manual From the Manual:   " WHO•INPUT In TV mode, press WHO•INPUT to toggle through the available Video Input channels (VID/SVID and the current channel). In SAT mode, press to select available channel lists.
Using the WHO•INPUT Button Use the WHO•INPUT button to toggle through the available input sources (VID and the current channel) and view the content from the component you have connected to the TV. 1. Press TV to place the remote in TV mode. Make sure that the content from the component is turned ON. 2. Press WHO•INPUT to tune to the available input source and view the component. 3. Press WHO•INPUT again to tune back to the channel you were previously watching.  "
