It is a free arm model so not much flat area to use
You can definitely quilt on the Singer Simple 3116! However, I do NOT recommend quilting several different kinds of fabric together. I don't think the machine can handle it, so stick with quilting cottons. I free-motion quilt on mine with the darning/free-motion foot. You can also use an even-feed foot for straight (and only straight...) quilting. I, personally, think that an even-feed is far too expensive and certainly not as versatile as learning to free-motion. You can find both feet here: http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/part-model/Singer-Parts/Sewing-machine-Parts/Model-3116/1232/1220000/50033899/00007
Good luck!
You could probably do light quilting on it, you'd probably
need to buy a extension table for it.
here's a link for parts for the the machine, they do have a extension
table you might be interested in.

Oil the top of the needle bar very lightly and the moving parts of the takeup lever, if you still have it then I would suggect taking it in for a check before it costs a lot of money
