I had the same problem. I tried the first solution and I was able to play my mp3's immediately after the upgrade.

thanks a million. I actually thought I was going to be forced into buying an ipod, which is something I really don't want to do right now or in the future.

    thanks again.

Please verify device is working properly and is not being accessed by another application. Please repeat the upgrade. If problems persist, device firmware may be corrupted.

This is the best solution you have update your lyra rd 1080/rd 1090 for download the updating click her http://download.rca.com/download/RD1080_90FWUpgrade_v4.26.exe and after instaling this update follwo instructions provided below ? To update your Lyra RD1080/RD1090, make sure you have it connected to the computer via the included USB cable. You will need to make sure that no external memory has been inserted and the Lyra RD1080/RD1090 display reads: "USB Connected Int. Mem". (If it does not, please refer to the users guide for the section on how to switch between internal and external memory.) ? Once connected, locate and run the Lyra Systems File Update Utility if it didn't open automatically. Installshield Wizard will have automatically created this icon on your desktop as well as under "Programs", "Lyra Personal Audio Player", "RD1080/RD1090" in your START menu. ? Click the "Refresh" button until the RD1080/RD1090 player shows up under device. ? Once displayed, highlight the drive letter by clicking on it, and click the "Update SYstem Files" button. ? When successfully completed, you will see the message, "The Lyra Personal Audio Player Device system files were successfully updated." ? Click the "OK" button, and then "Done". This will close the Lyra Systems File Update Utility. ? Disconnect the Lyra RD1080/RD1090 from the USB cable, turn the unit off and back on.

Go here and download the firmware update. TAKE THE FLASH CARD OUT OF THE LYRA! Plug the Lyra in using a USB cable and run the firmware update.

Works like a champ.

The RCA Lyra 1090a says bad or missing lyrasys

What i do is i never put songs in my internal memory...this way you never have to worry about formating the internal memory....so i have several exteral card i use say one for country or rock and its so easy to format a exteral card just place it in ur card reader if ur using a laptop them go to my computer right click on ur card that youll find then youll notice on the list theres format so its so easy...im sure its asking you to format ur drive because you must have a few corrupted files....best of all when adding music just pull ur external card out place it in a reader fill ur card with music then insert it back in ur device...this way ur getting away with using any firmware....by the way take any disc that came with ur Lyra and chuck it in the garbage that 90 percent of all ur problems

RCA Lyra RD2317

Remember when you format memory like a hard drive you erase everything. Move music to your internal mp3 memory and do a profile - folders should appear. If you have flashed your player with the firmware update you can get 520 songs on the player for both internal and external combined but be warned that if you exceed this count your player will start to forget the earlier loaded songs - listed but not addressable (playable). The same is for the folder count eg. add album = artist + ablum title (min 2 folders). Plus always profile your songs after loading new music or deleting as this is an index build process to play song 152 = title x. This includes accidental radio recordings to MP3s. RD2312 , RD2315, RD2317 Lyra™ mp3 flash player Firmware/Application Upgrade Version 3.11 fixes:
  • Supports a total of 520 songs, in up to 50 folders, with up to 8 levels of subfolders.
