When turned on, the printer initializes the cartridge, and perform inkcharge. So there is some ink discharged to waste ink pad. The printer calculates the amount of waste ink, and when the waste inkreaches a certain amount, which approached the waste absorptioncapacity pad, then the printer will stop printing command. Intendedto waste ink does not overflow from the waste pad. To be able to re-use the printer must be reset waste ink counter., and replace thewaste pad. Or it could also extend the exhaust hose to outsidebottle.

Your printer has a built-in waste ink tank for the ink used during print head cleaning. As time goes by, the waste ink tank gradually fills. When the waste ink tank is nearly full, you should receive a "Waste ink warning" error when you print. Press the RESUME button on the printer to cancel the error so you can continue printing. Before the waste ink tank becomes completely full, have the waste ink tank replaced.

You don't want to reset the waste ink counter unless you have removed all of the waste ink. Unless you feel like totally dismantling your printer and hand washing the felt pads that are currently soaked in ink you'll probably want to have it serviced professionally or just replace it. Most times replacement is less expensive. Resetting the waste ink counter without cleaning out the waste ink can, and likely will, result in waste ink eventually overflowing out of the the bottom of your machine. Be cautious.

I can't remember the actual details (they vary from printer to printer) but if you google "reset waste ink Canon" you should find the correct button sequence for your printer.
I've had to do if for 2 of mine and they are both different.

Here is the good news - You do not need to fiddle with dodgy reset programs anymore - EPSON can provide you with the reset tool - This maintenance message is when your ink pads couner have reached their target - this will prevent ink from overflowing and making a big mess.

Fill out the information and download their reset tool - but please read the caution - you must replace the ink pads ! do not ever attempt to reset and keep using your printer - eventually your pads won't hold more ink and you will get ink flowing out of your printer, even on the inside and damage your circuit boards.

Of course changing the pads is not an easy thing, you have to take the printer apart and I don't recommend it - so the easy method is to locate the waste ink tube and have it connected to a container outside your pritner to collect ink.

be very careful not to pull too much on the tube so it does not disconnect from the pump. Once you have your tube redirected into a waste bottle outside, you can run the reset program outlined above.

Hi. As you have not mentioned the make and model of the printer, I am giving here the procedure to reset waste ink counter applicable to most printers. Hope it helps.
Canon Pixma iP1200, iP1600, iP2200 Resetter

1. Download software for Canon iP1200, iP1600, 2200 Printers.DOWNLOAD Service Tool Software for Canon Pixma Printer iP1200, iP1600, iP2200
2. Unzip downloaded file by WinZip, 7Zip, Izarc, etc
3. Run GeneralTool.exe
4. Select the connected USB port number from USB PORT
5. Click LOCK RELEASE, and select the applicable model name in SET DESTINATION
6. In CLEAR WASTE INK COUNTER, select MAIN or PLATEN. The selected waste ink counter will be reset. MAIN resets the main waste ink counter, PLATEN resets the platen waste ink counter.

If both the main and platen waste ink absorbers are replaced, reset both the main and platen waste ink counters.
