The click sound tells us that the microprocessor circuit is working and can be eliminated.
The horizontal is the number one suspect. It could be shorted. If it is, then, the high voltage transformer or the focus block become a suspect as well.
The voltages on the secondary of the power supply is the next place to check. If they are all there, then, you can rule out the power supply. If the voltages are missing, then, the regulator circuit is where the problem is.
If only one voltage is missing, then, the the secondary has an issue and the circuit it supplies probably has a short.

Your convergence ICs have failed. Thats what causes the led to blink three times. The PT53WX53 convergence repair kit from www.tvrepairworld.com will usually repair that issue. The kit also contains the CD with detailed repair instructions.
It does sound like a heat related issue. What did you clean? I removed the back panel. Use compressed air to blow out all the dust from the components inside. Do not blow into the fan on the right.
I also replaced the batteries on the remote with new Alkaline batteries. Do not use rechargeable. Weak batteries can cause the remote to send POWER OFF command to the set.
Sometimes there's a way to reset the counter by mashing certain keys on the TV itself in a sequence, but if your owner's manual doesn't specify this option, then you may have to get the original replacement remote to be able to reset it.
