Problem with external monitor activating with DV6 1360-us
Switch to external monitor does not work when Fn & F4 keys depressed. Screen on DV6 goes black but no picture on monitor. Using a different DV6 I have interchanged cables, cords and monitors between the two units. They all work individually and collectively with second pc. Using different monitor, cables, cords with problem PC does not change anything. Although the monitor is recognized no data flows. I also have connected the monitor directly to the pc and through the docking station. I believe it must be software of some type. It has worked successfully for over 3 years.

You can switch to an external monitor or data projector by two methods. 1. Connect the external monitor to the laptop's video port, power up the external monitor first and the laptop. The video information will automatically switch to the external monitor. 2. If you power up the laptop first then you can switch the video output to the external monitor by pressing the Fn key and one of the Function keys, depending upon your make and model laptop. You can also toggle between the external monitor or both LCD screen plus the external monitor or back to LCD screen only by pressing the Fn key plus one of the function key a few times. Here is a list of key combinations for some of the laptops :- IBM ThinkPad = Fn + F7 HP and Compaq = Fn + F4 Toshiba = Fn + F5 Dell = Fn + F8
The issue seems to be with the video card drivers here...
Go to www.hp.com/suport and download the latest video card and the chipset drivers
before you download ...uninstall the nvidiachipset or any display software from program and features.
after you have installed the software.. go to the nvidia control panel > setup multiple monitors. and browse throughout the options >
It should be dual display and not extended display.
I would back mothmans answer 100% but might suggest you re-assemble the display to the laptop if you continue to have problems getting an external display going.
