Realplayer is ok for small .wav files and for browsing videos on the internet, but for watching a dvd i would use either Power DVD or Windows media player as they have all the supported sound and video codecs Some media players have truoble reading different dvd depending on how they were burned or the file quality.

Many thanks for your trouble but the problem is no more.I re-installed my old CD/DVD player to prove it was the LG writers fault, they played back OK.On replacing the LG the problem vanished and all DVDs now play back as they should on Power DVD.
Why I dont know but you probably will.
Thank you once more, its good to know someone cares about problems
