Firewire connection lost

Hi

Whenever the Saffire le is connected, it says on the saffire software: "Firewire connection lost."
Although in device manager it says the device is connected, I have updated the firmware inside the card, the software, and all updates for my operating system (vista).
If I try to use the card with any audio software, the software hangs and I have to close it, If I scan the soundcard for changes through device settings it hangs there also.
Sometimes if I restart the computer the card will connect for a second, but then disconnects and then continually does this.
I am using a laptop and connecting the card via an 34 express slot with a Startech Firewire card, this has a texas instruments chipset which is reccomended by Focusrite, but I'm still getting problems.
I have searched and searched the web, but very few people seem to be having this problem unfortunately!
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I would have returned the card as I think that is where the issue lies, but I have ran out of time.
Merry Christmas
Jamie

Same problem here with my xps420 dell pc .Although I just bought mine so will send it back as it's still under warranty.

Exactly the same problem here with almost the same specs, although it's a Saffire that I've got.The only difference is that I can't even update the firmware. Cubase sees the Saffire, the Saffire gets the sound but the Saffire Control always gives me the "Firewire lost connection" message.

Hope someone has got a solution for us as none of the "tips" on Focusrite web page has worked so far...

I am experiencing exactly the same problem. Saffire is not recognized as connected to laptop. The system fails to "see" it. Does anyone think it could be the not enough power supply? I mean how many of you guys supply power through power adaptor and how many through firewire? I can only supply through adaptor since I connect Saffire to a laptop (3pin connection)...

Ok, here it is. There is an answer is the answer based section on the Focusrite website. Basically it is recognizing it as a firewire device and not an audio device, or so I have gathered. So you need to uninstall the Saffire software and then: 1. Find your FireWire (IEEE 1394) controller in Device Manager (START>CONTROL PANEL>SYSTEM>). 2. Click "Update driver" 3. Select "Browse my computer for driver software" 4. Click "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer" 5. Install the driver that ends with "(Legacy)". 6. Reinstall your Saffire driver using the latest version from the Focusrite website, and re-connect your device.
Hope this helps,
Cheers - DJ Zerokewl

In my case... The interface "Saffire" must have its own firewire input to the computer ... You can not connect external disks to the same firewire input... Tomas K

Lost conection firewire ,

Check you have the latest software or firmware drivers from their website at Focusrite.com

Check that the FireWire cable is connected properly.

Try using the supplied power cable.

Try using the other FireWire port found on the back of your Saffire product, and also try different ports (if you have more than one) on your computer.
If you have any other FireWire devices connected, try disconnecting them, as they may be restricting the FireWire bandwidth too much if connectedon the same bus.
NB: You may have more than one FireWire port on your computer. Note that they may be connected to the same bus, even though they appear to be physically seperate. This will be the case if you have a FireWire card with multiple FireWire ports on (all ports on the card will be on the same bus), and is also often the case if you have multiple ports inbuilt on you system.
Increase the FireWire buffer size on your FireWire card, found at C:/Program Files/Focusrite [Saffire product]/Driver/ASIOControlPanel.exe (where [Saffire product] is the name of your Saffire product). Its default setting is 2ms, but you may find that increasing it helps connectivity and will improve audio performance, at the cost of increasing latency.

Firewire audio problem

Hey Waterleo
I am running a very similar system. Black macbook and saffire not LE.
So this could be your problem. When you first connect the firewire cable to your mac from the saff you will see on the inputs a signal coming from nowhere. This is the mac syncing with the saff. Im pretty sure its the same with the LE but you must wait until your Line Mode(pad) lights turn green this means the two are connected. Try waiting for this it may take upto 3 or 4 mins sometimes depending if you are using the external powersupply or not.
If you have already done this and still nothing try this. FIrst plug a guitar into an input of the saff and confirm there is a signal being produced. If so your problem may be in your system prefs.
Apple menu --> System prefs----> sound
you will see a window with 3 tabs labled input, output and sound effects.
go to input and confirm that the saffire is in the below list and highlighted, the same for output.
Ignore sound effects.
Also i just looked at my saffire and i am not being rude now but i am assuming that your new to this tech. so there is a pot(knob) on the front for your saffire labled monitor, this is your main volume for the system.
hope this helps my friend.

Crackling when recording with saffire

Without much info to go on I would first make sure that your input levels are not set too high when recording causing clipping and digital distortion on playback. Usually this is the thing that causes crackling sounds. Rather hard to fix after the fact and you may have to rerecord those tracks to get a cleaner sound you are happy with.
