With .avi files the issue is usually which video codec has been used to encode it - all players will have certain codecs installed, and if the second player you describe does not have the approprtiate codec then it will struggle to play the file - occasionally the audio codecs can have the same effect, also on video. In your video conversion program you should be able to choose from a list of codecs to use to encode the .avi file, check which one you used and then check it is installed on the computer that is experiencing the problem.
