I got a system form my school with no HDD. I got a standard IDE interface seagate baracuda 7200 rpm 160 GB HDD. I tried booting the system with a boot CD. But the error it is showing is CDBOOT: Memory overflow error. What can be the problem?
Did you format the drive first? How about the setup, did you go through the setup routine and sellect and save the default settings? Did you format the drive first? How about the setup, did you go through the setup routine and sellect and save the default settings?

If you have both a CD drive & a DVD drive, make sure you are using the 1st physical device (according to physical hookup).
Or if you do have both, then try booting with CD in other drive

Guys this one stumped me for some time, here is my solution that worked like a dream
1. plug the hard drive you are using into a pc and check the hard drive is recognise and works. 2. Delete all partitions 3. ensure it has a 8 bit cache buffer!! This is the most important one. That means the system only supports older hard drives. I got 2 second hand ones from the local pc store for $50. See the list of hard drives that are know to work below.
FYI for some reason the person I bought this off online "Ebay" had no idea how to support and I could not get support from their web site as they email they give just bounces back.
Yes it will work in a PC. All 3.5" sata drives are standardized. Connect it via a SATA cable and you will need to format the drive to work with windows. To do this:
1) Right-click on my computer 2) Click on "Manage" 3) Click yes to allow if any dialogue's pop up. 4) When the menu pops up look at the left side menu and click on "Disk Management" 5) Look for your drive in the list when it populates. It should show a 500GB drive and it may show an error on it since it is not formatted for windows. 6) Be sure this is the correct drive you want to use! Formatting it will erase EVERYTHING on the drive. 7) Right click on the drive in the bottom list and select the Format option. 8) Give it whatever name you want, make sure the format is set to NTFS, check the box for quick format. 9) Let it format, this should only take a few minutes. After that it will show up as a blank drive in My Computer!

try replacing all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ? good luck
Find in your BIOS if you have an option that says configure SATA as IDE, AHCI and
raid. Set it at IDE and try again to install the OS. After intaling do not switch back because it will not work.
The disk is either damaged or the USB interface is damaged. 1) You could try opening the external case and connect the disk to your computer directly (Using IDE/S-ATA cables) 2) Format the HD and use data recovery software/service.
a hard drive (usually a standard IDE or SATA drive), and
an enclosure
The enclosure is the box containing the drive. It also includes an interface to convert the data from the IDE or SATA interface on the drive to a USB (2) signal. Some enclosures include and internal power supply. The Freeagent has the power supply externally.
If your running XP , go to control panal , Admin tools>Computer Management >Storage > Disk Management . Look for it there . If its there see if it says what file system . If none format it . If it isnt there then chack the jumper on the hard drive it self . It should be set to master or cable select .
