Check when you turn it ON if you would see the keyboard lights or the CAPS lights respond. If they do, then the unit is ON but your LCD could be defective. Try using an external screen if that is the case.
In case there is really no power coming in, you will need to try and get a hold of a new/spare power cable/adapter and test with it.
Also, try removing the battery and use the laptop with just the power cable.

Sounds like a capacitor may have burned out on the motherboard, and may be related to the power regulator for the battery. The power regulator on laptops is what regulates how/when/if the battery is charged. Either way, your last posting is correct in that the motherboard needs to be replaced to correct a potentially faulty part soldered into the motherboard.

Ok, then, try this:
1. Unplug your power cord,
2. Remove Battery,
3. Press power on botton for 3 sec.
4. Now plug battery again,
5. Locate F8 key (it is a single key, at top of your keyboard)
6. Press power on boton, and as soon as screen shows manufacturer logo (or memory count), start to press F8 key repeatedly until a menu display,
7. Select "Secure mode"
8. When the system starts, clic on "Start" boton, and type "recovery"
9. At new window click on "Open System Restore"
10. At new window, cick on "next"
11. From list, select a date prior AVG uninstallation.
12. Follow wizard instructions.
System will restart several times, and if you are luky, then your system will work again. And, PLEASE, Do not install Symatec any more. Try Essentials:
