The screen of my camera has gone completely black, nothing through the lens screen at all. I checked all the settings and system settings, and nothing happens. When I take a picture it´s just black. What could this possibly be?
I am having the same problem and contacted vivitar. I have yet to get a response but, I feel there are a lot of the same issues with this same camera all over the globe. I have seen countless inquiries about it. I feel it has to do with the lcd monitor myself. The same lcd monitor is being recalled in sony products.

your dead right the lens is closed when the unit is turned on a small latch pulls away a black sheld that stops light (direct) from damaging the lens these latches fail some times and are real expensive to have fixed
im sorry but i think its time to go looking for a new camera
This is probably THE most common failure among digital cameras. There's a halfway chance of fixing it yourself, described here: http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
Replace CCD unit in the camera, vivitar are the only ones that should do that but aparantly they charge you for it. The CCD unit in the 5385 is a common fault in the camera.
I have the same problem. Fine one day and a black screen the next. I called Vivtar and they were no help. They wanted me to send it in and let them repair it at my expense. don't think so. everything works perfect on the camera...but the screen is black and so are the pictures. Good Luck!
