Gear alignment on outboard motor

Removed lower unit with remote control in Neutral. When replacing lower unit i put remote in forward and LU in forward.when turning prop clockwise the shaft turns as it should but if I turn prop CC the shaft should turn freely but it also turns shaft CC with remote in forward.I have tried LU gear positions in all positions but get the same results.Suggestions to remedy this problem please.Thank you.

When the gear box ix in forward, it should make a ratcheting noise when rotated forward and should not turn at all when turning in reverse (or be resistant as your back spinning the water pump -don't do that) Once in gear (forward ) you should be able to mate the shift to the motor. I have removed the prop and nut and used a remote start to spin every thing together, but requires a lot of safety precautions.

If you are working on an older mercury, that shift rod can work both ways with disastrous results if you over spin the shifter to the back side of the detent.

SOURCE: we have a 9.5 johnson outboard motor, it works in

I would think that the problem is a worn clutch dog. Drain the gear oil from lower unit. You need to disconnect the shift linkage and pull the lower unit like you would to change the water pump. Then remove waterpump housing and waterpump base. The base will have a seal so you need to be careful and gently and evenly pry the base up until it comes off. Next you need to remove the prop and depending on the year there is a ring screw around the prop shaft that needs removed. Also there is a phillips screw that needs to be removed near the lower gear oil drain plug. That screw holds the shift cradle in place. From here you should be able to slide the drive shaft up and out and the prop shaft should slide out. The clutch dog is the smaller piece in between the two gears that engages fwd and rev. You really should have a mechanic do the work but if you get a book it will help you. Pay very close attention how it comes apart and make sure that you dont mix up the fwd gear with the rev. gear.

SOURCE: 1996 evinrude outboard stalls when put in gear

Start by adjusting your idle mixture screw. Start at 1 1/2 turns out and with the engine in gear at an idle slowly turn the screw clockwise until the engine starts to die, then back off a half turn and that will be your proper setting. If you need to you can bump up your idle stop screw just a touch so it will hold also.

SOURCE: Help. recently cavitated my 140 hp 1989 mercury outboard motor

You may have spun the hub inside your propeller. Look between the center hub with the splines and the casting of the prop there is a rubber insert in there. See if it is distorted. The nut and washer are keeping the prop on but I think you will find if you put it in gear and try to turn the prop by hand it will spin and the shaft will not move.

SOURCE: how to remove the lower unit on a 35hp Johnson outboard yr 2000.

if you haven't fixed this already, take the pastic water pick up covers off there are two joiner nuts in there undo them, there is a plastic cone on each end take them off and it will slip through. I own the same model and year outboard.

Have 1972 80 HP Mercury replaced water pump put lower unit back stift to forward then back neutral and back to forward nothing happens put in revrice it take off forward

Put the engine in Neutral and with the lower unit removed put it (lower unit in neutral and reassemble make sure the shift shaft on the engine inserts onto the male part of the gear case. You have to line (shift shaft ) up as it goes up. You also can do this with both in forward.

50hp force that jumps in an out of gear

I need year model to be precise? But here are the basic tools and troubleshooting steps. TOOL (1) a black marker.(2) a tape measure (3) a second person. TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS(1) the force need water so put it in the lake or install water hose.(2) do not start engine yet. remove engine cover and find shift cable by shifting remote control. once you find were the shift cable connects to the shift linkage. learn which way is forward and reverse. is it push or pull by the cable. remove the cable.(3) now the shift mechanism is removed from the boat controls. this test will require you shifting the shift linkage by hand so stay clear of the flywheel and all moving parts. (4) start engine. at idle speed and you in a safe location near the shift linkage shift engine into forward gear by the shift linkage. be aware how far you need to move the linkage before it shifts into forward. Mark that location with the maker somewhere you can see.(5) shift the linkage back to neutral. mark location were neutral begins. you will fill it click out of the forward gear.(6)now shift into reverse gear marking that location.(7) shift it to neutral making that location as you fill it leave the gear(8) shut off engine turn off water or take it out of lake (9) look at you marks and measure the distance between neutral and forward. the measure the distance between neutral and reverse(9) the second person needs to be in the boat to work the remote control. you need to be at the engine with the tape measure. person #2 needs to make sure remote control is in neutral. you need to measure the remote control cable end so you get a measurment with it in neutral. make a note of the neutral lenght.(10) person #2 shift remote control into forward gear. you measure cable end for distance traveled to go to forward.(11) make the measurement for reverse same way.(12) this is how you find out if you clutch dog is to wore out to stay in gear by the travel of the shift linkage compared to the travel of the shift cable. There are adjustments but they only go so far. that means you will have to sacrifice one gear for the other to make up for the distance of travel.

Gear shifter for 40 h. p. mariner outboard

With your lower unit off have someone shift the engine into forward while watching the gear shift select shaft's rotation, let gearshift remain in forward, now place your lower unit in forward and reinstall. In the future just put engine in forward when installing a water pump as there won't be a need to move gearshift
