I havent touched my scanner in a couple of years (or more actually). I went so far as to order a new AC adapter from Canon to plug it back in. When I did, it didn't whir as usual, and the scanning unit inside the scanner (I can see through the glass flatbed) didn't even move. It powered on and everything...this is really frustrating. I don't want to buy a new scanner, and am wondering if I can just unscrew this thing and muddle around. It is in perfect cosmetic condition, just not sure why it won't "scan" or anything.
These have quite a flimsy rubber drive belt which can stick and go hard. If you can get to it you might be able to soften it up with a soak over night in olive oil. Finding a replacement might be difficult..

Try the scanner on another computer to verify that it is not just a conflict on that particular computer.

Make sure the scanner is unlocked. Lock switch is either on the bottom, or under the scanner lid near the hinges.

Do you have enough disk space? Check if your C; drive has enough space. Normally C: is used as 'scratch area'. Try scanning intoa different location.

Modification to my question: I see what's going on. The orange belt that pulls the scanning unit has dislodged from the unit. It looks like I just need to snap it back in. But I dont know how to get to it. If anybody knows about disassembly, please post.
