Utilitech 1-HP Cast Iron Shallow Well Jet Pump PPSWJ100 Logo
Anonymous Posted on Sep 15, 2012

I have a Utilitech 1hp shallow well jet pump which turns off and on rapidly while using water. I have 25 psi in the air tank. I replaced the pressure switch and still have problems.

I turned off pump and drained water from house and outside faucet. I have 25 psi in bladder tank. I replaced the pressure switch and the pump still rapidly shuts on and off when I use water. The pump is only 14 months old.

Did you drain the tank when you drained all the other parts of the system? It will be very light when it is drained, as in no water in it. It will be easy to wiggle. When did you check the air pressure? It is set when the tank is empty of water and must hold that pressure basically forever, if it leaks out, the bladder or air input valve is bad.\Did this start all of a sudden or has it always operated this way?

In the meantime, one of my neighbors came by and adjusted the pressure on the switch. It seems to be working fine now. Something so simple. Saved me a bunch of money. Thanks for your reply. I really appreciate it.

Someone failed to drain the water system at the hunting ranch and the water froze and cracked the pump. The motor is fine so I am looking to replace the pump housing. Where can I purchase parts for UtiliTECH 0054316 1HP shallow pump?

What are the carbon brushes sizes used with Utilitech pump model no. 55832

The pump is short cycling. I have been told to turn the power off, open a water valve, put air in the tank to 20lbs and this should clear up my problem. Where is the valve to add the air?

Good you got it working. Please post again if you have more trouble on this or another item. Also be sure and check what I mentioned just in case you are operating at the margins, don't want a failure right after you got it going!

Yes, thank you again. Putting this site on my favorites list. Own an older home and run into problems occasionally. Very hard to find a repairman that isn't trying to get more money out of me for unneccessary repairs. Thanks again! : )

Why would my 1 hp pump only maintain 45 psi running 1 garden hose?

Without knowing all your variables with well it is hard to say. Bladder tank needs to have 30 psi with no water pressure. It is possible that the screen down the well is restricted and you are only getting that much water. Or you may have clogged impeller in pump.

Can the pressure switch on the Utilitech 1hp convertible shallow well pump be changed from 20/40 to 30/50?

Yes, if the plumbing can handle the extra pressure. There should be a nut in the middle of a large spring inside the pressure switch. Turn that nut clockwise to increase the pressure. You may need to run some water to keep the pump cycling while you do this.

Low water pressure how do i increase the pressure

The water pressure is adjusted with the pressure switch, which turns the pump on and off. The pressure switch is typically set for a cut-in and cut-out pressure of 20-40 psi, or 30-50 psi. Usually there are adjustment directions on the inside of the switch cover. But, there are several other factors that may affect the house pressure. If there is a pressure tank that is pre-charged, the tank pressure may need to be reset, or the tank bladder may be ruptured. Have the entire system checked out.

Problem with pump?

The pump pressure switch should be checked to see what the ON-OFF pressure is set at. Typically the pressure switch is set for 20-40 psi, or 30-50 psi. The pressure tank should be purged as well. With the pump OFF, and the tank drained of water, the air valve on the tank should read approximately 2 psi below the "on pressure". So if the system operates at 20-40, the tank should be pre-charged to 18 psi. If water escapes from the air valve, the internal bladder in the tank is ruptured, and the tank needs to be replaced. A tire air gauge is used to measure the pressure in the tank after the water is emptied from the tank.. A tire air pump or a compressor is used to charge the tank. if a compressor is used, be careful not to over-inflate the tank, as this may cuase the bladder to rupture.

My Wel-Bilt 1hp Shallow Well Pump #109231 is continually recycling (every 30 seconds). It looses about 10 pounds of pressure as soon as it reaches 40 lbs. There are no obvious leaks anywhere. The tank...

It is hard to figure out but you have what I call a water bound system. There is no air in your pressure tank. The easiest way to resolve is to drain the tank, let it fill with air, then turn on the pump, problem should be resolved for a while. There is a device that regulates the amount of air in the tank, that has failed or needs adjusting.

I have a utilitech convertable pump. It is used as a shallow well pump at the moment. It worked fine untill last week, the hot water tank went bad and we replaced the tank and all the above ground lines....

Hi mid_age_elf
Your problem is that your "water bound"...
Your water tank must have a cushion of air for the pressure switch to work properly.
Turn off your pump and drain about 1/3 of the water from your tank.
Once you have an "air cushion" the pump and switch will work properly.
You can also add air pressure using an air compressor and an air valve installed on the top of your water tank or maybe on the side or bottom of the tank.
You would put air into the tank until about 1/3 of the water is gone replaced with the air.
Once that is complete your problem will be solved.

Flotec 42 gallon water tank - short cycling and changing water stream...do I need a new tank or could it be another problem?

These holding tanks are pre charged with air which in turn pressurizes the water. The tank has a bladder and an air valve on top. The pre charge ,over time, loses pressure, and the tank has to be pressurized again.
  • The well pump needs to be turned off.
  • The water has to be drained from the tank
  • Air is put into the tank from the air valve on top of the tank, and is measured with a tire air gauge.
  • The pre charge pressure is set to two psi below the pump cut in pressure.
  • In other words if your pump kicks on at 30 psi, the pre charge pressure is set at 28 psi. If the pump kicks in at 20 psi, the pre charge is set at 18psi, etc.
  • After you pressurize the tank, turn water back on.
  • If water comes out of air valve on top of tank, then the bladder is ruptured and you need a new tank.
  • Hope this helps!
