I am fixing my friends computer, it originally posted ram malfunction, that is fixed now, and it powers up fine shuts down fine, but the screen is blank and the power button flashes almost like it is stuck in standby. i have fixed many computers but never encountered this, any suggestions would be much appreciated!
Start as basic as you can, remove everything you can, RAM, HDD, modem (if equipped), WiFi card, optical drive, etc. It should beep when powered up, complaining about missing RAM. Install RAM and see if you can get it to POST. If so, install 1 item at a time until it stops working. Bad part found.
If it doesn't complain about the ram, it's probably a bad system board. If it does complain, but doesn't post with the RAM in, it could be still be a bad stick of RAM or a bad RAM socket on the board, try one at a time, and in each of the sockets.

Most laptops that I have worked on that power off that quickly turned out to be an overheating problem. Is the cooling fan running for the brief period that you can hear the hard drive before it powers off ? If the fan is running another potential resolution might be to remove the processor and apply new thermal paste.

Sounds like a classic case of hardware failure!!!!!!! possibly your motherboard, start by removing the battery, hard drive and optical drive.
disconnect the laptop monitor and connect the laptop to an external monitor.
remove the memory modules clean the brass contacts with a eraser and place back in the machine 1 at a time to check to see if they work, remember to plug in the AC power suppy, if you see the post screen then its a memory issue and you can then reconnect your laptop monitor to see if it lights up, if everything works but the monitor then its the inverter or backlight that has blown and is easily repairable saving you money on a brand new screen

Here's a link to a good article that will help you to troubleshoot the startup error. You might also check Toshiba support online and see what the error light code indicates.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

If it does not even post or show the DELL Logo then this may already be a hardware failure. The best thing to do is to contact Dell Tech Support. Specially if you still have warranty. It could already be a couple of things ranging from the memory to the motherboard itself.
