I have just purchased a Sony Wega 32" TV. Although working well so far when I initially turn the TV on there is a slight flash on the screen, which remains black for a while, and then a strange noise before the picture appears a few seconds later. Is this normal??

Re: Sony Wega 32"TV - noise on startup
The slight flash on the screen is usually because the CRT (picture tube) is holding a better than average charge and this is what we call "pre-glow" The noise that you hear, is that everytime you turn it on or just after it has been off for a while? If only after the set has been sitting off for a while then your noise is the internal degauser for the CRT and that noise is 100% normal. The degausers in Sony TV's are so strong they usually make the plastic cabinet vibrate a bit.

10,000 continous woking hours is calculated to most of the CRT based TVs.
It is only calculation, but the life span might be much more that that. I've repaired a Sony TV recently, which was released by Sony Corporation Japan. The model is KV1820, an 18" Trinitron TV, still works perfectly. Just see, it is an '80 model one. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/
The problem is with its main power regulator section itself. Three
blinks - B+ over voltage protection (OVP), unit goes to the standby mode then
displays the 3 blink fault. This is also a problem in the power supply circuit,
check T603 and R672. This is the fault, and check points. For more details about the blinking codes for Sony TVs, check this.
the power supply is a switched mode. you need to take your tv to a w/shop, and let them check the following.
powersupply rectifier diodes, power trasistor lekage,
diodes, zener diodes,
if a 90-110 volts to the line trasistor,
a line transistor be checked.
