That "rattling" noise is probably a malfunction with the carriage. It could be several different things, but in my experience a problem like that is nothing more than gunk built up on the carriage guides or cables prohibiting proper movement & loading of the disc. This is common in consoles that sit on carpet constantly, have pets around them, or have smokers around. It's also possible that the gear that controls the height of the lens assembly either overheated or just wore out, causing it to be uneven & therefore hit the carriage. Sometimes that can be fixed without replacing the part. If you do have to replace the part, they can be had cheaply on Ebay.
Here is a link to a repair guide that will walk you through the disassembly & lens gear adjustment. Just blow the console out with a can of compressed air to clean it. Be careful when cleaning the carriage assembly; If you rub off the grease that is on there you will have to relubricate it!

sounds like the laser is shot or possibly dirty, either way needs lookin at. so may need new laser. my own personal preference, go custom firmware and do away with using the laser, theres lots info on the web if interested.

You most likely need to clean the lens. Local game stores have kits that clean it for you.

Did you ever drop it? Usually if a PSP will not read UMD's, either the laser is dirty or it has been moved. If you dropped it, the laser has probably been moved. You'd have to take the whole entire thing apart to move the laser back, assuming you knew the position it should be in in the first place. Even if you have dropped it, the first thing I would do is to pick up a UMD drive cleaning kit for around $10 and try that. If that does not work, I would suggest sending it to be repaired. I hope this helps!
