I have a Hotpoint side-by-side refrigerator that is 8 years old. The freezer will not get down past 40 degrees and the compressor gets hot.The compressor and fan to the coil seems to turn off, maybe overheating? It will restart after 30 minutes or so but never cool it down where it is supposeded to be.I cleaned the coils and noticed that the coils in the back of my freezer only frost 3/4 way up. I was told that the coils are supposed to frost all the way up. I had it turned on for 5 hours and it never made it below 40 degrees and would stop working after a while. I would feel the compressor and it was hot and the lines where hot as well. Is my compressor shot or is it a simple relay switch on the compressor? Also can it be saved without an expensive fix?

Are the condensor coils clean. and condensor fan running? (in rear by compr.) then sounds like seal sys problem

How much do you think it will cost to fix?

  • Anonymous Sep 17, 2012

A sealed system repair can start at $300 and go up. depending on if its just a vacuum and recharge (also, we always replace filter/drier which can clog with every sealed sys repair) if there is a leak there may be a need to replace evap coil. or bad compressor.

So should I just scrap it? Is it worth fixing? I bought a new fridge and now I have this one in my garage.

if the condensor fan is running, and the coils are clean then the compressor should not be overheating. the only other thing I can suggest from here is possibly try a start relay. You can get a generic one for abut $12. this is on the side of the compressor and has the overload built in. best thing before condeming a $400 compressor. on side note, this one has the digital controls on the door right?, if it had the actual temp display those numbers should have been close to what was going on inside. (trying to make sure the computer sees whats really going on.)

SOURCE: Kenmore Elite refrigerator stops cooling - Relay keeps cycling

The compressor is locked up. Basically it is stuck. You can pick up at the local appliance parts store a hard start relay, Home Depot ,Lowes, or or those guys wont have it. Its not too expensive and is worth trying because your only other option is you need to replace the compressor. The part is called a kick start or hard start, the guy at the parts store will know what you are talking about. It is simple to connect and has the wiring directions on it. Sometimes this is all it takes. I have been able to get a stuck compressor to go by placing a short 2x4 on it and whack it with a hammer a few times. This is only a temporary fix though, as it will eventually lock up again, but emergency situation this saved the food. If the fridge has a fan back there make sure it works too, it may have been the original cause. Good luck.

SOURCE: Refrigerator/freezer gets warm intermittently

sounds like your thermostat is faulty
the thermostat reads the temperature of the cabinet and controls the temperature
the 1 thing to check on the uprights is the evaporator is in the freezer and that makes the cool then there is a fan that blows the air around the fridge and freezer to freeze things
now there is a cycle that hapens to cycle usualy every 12 hours and that is the defrost cycle
this cycle turns off the compressor and fan turns on an defrost element on the evaporator and heats up the coils to get rid of the ice
the ice turns to water and runs through a drain to a evaporator tray and when the cycle is finished the fridge stars up again and goes into the cooling state again
when the thermostat decides that the fridge is cold enough it turns of the compressor and so on it goes through the cycles as required
if the drai is blocked or the defrost system is not working the evaporator will get choked with ice and the fan will not beable to let air through to cool things off

the relay on the compressor is most likely the culprit part# 8201786 you can buy it at the local sears parts and repair center it is very easy to replace it. your refrig compartment will start warming up soon. to prevent damage to your compressor probably a good idea to unplug the refrig until you get the part replaced..

SOURCE: Kenmore Refrgierator is not cooling enough

Is the frost on the entire surface of the evaporator or just a portion. If it is only frosting on a portion there is a possibility your system has developed a leak and has lost some of the charge. Or your compressor has lost its ability to pump the gas. A bad condenser fan motor overtaxes the compressor and can cause premature failure. If it is a bad compressor it may be time to replace the refrigerator. Replacing the compressor is an expensive job and the warranty is only one year on a replaced compressor.

SOURCE: My GE GSS22SGMBBSCC side by side refrigerator does not cool the upper freezer portion

Most newer GE fridges have dc fan motors controlled by a computer board. Sometimes the board just fails and sometimes the fan can cause the board to fail.

Sub Zero 700 suddenly stops after 12 years. Compresser is burning hot.

The compressor will normally be 100 to 110 degrees. I would suspect the thermostat or mouse damage in the freezer area. Also, if you keep it overstocked, to the point of poor air circulation, you could just have ice blockage. Put the frozen food in a styrofoam cooler or a good heavy corrugated box and give the unit a good full defrosting.

It could be a problem depending on how cold your garage gets in the winter. Most refrigerators depend on the compressor turning on to cool the freezer section and that cold air is used to cool the refrigerator section. If your the temperature in your garage gets in the 30-40 degree range in the winter. The compressor may not turn on sufficiently since the refrigerator is typically around the 35-40 degree range. This will cause the freezer to warm up to the fridge temperature and your freezer items will defrost.

Freezer in the gararge redfrigerator quits working when outside temps get real cold

hello. this is a common problem. The thermostat for a refrigerator/freezer is in the refrigerator part. Normally the refrigerator is kept at around 40 degrees. The compressor turns on as required to maintain this tempearture. The evaporator coils are concentrated in the freezer side, so that the freezer stays at around 0 degrees while the fridge side is held at 40.

If the ambient temp is around 25 degrees, the refrigerator compartment will get below the setpoint of 40 degrees, and gradually continue down towards 25 degrees. The compressor will not have to run at all to maintain this. In fact, the compressor is designed not to run, once the refrigerator compartment gets below the setpoint, for fear of freezing the contents of the fridge.

The lack of circulating refrigerant due to the non-running compressor means that the freezer compartment will gradually warm up to 25 degrees.

If the unit were just a freezer, it would work fine in the unheated garage. If it were just a refrigerator, it would not run in these conditions, and the contents would eventually freeze, but it is otherwise OK.

Greetings bkbkbt,

Many times this behavior is an early indicator that your unit either needs freon or might have a compressor issue. I would advise contacting a repair person before this problem gets worse.

Thank you,
