This is the message I get when I try printing to the device through Windows Vista. It was previously working fine. What is now happening is when the printer is powered up and it goes through its self check startup procedure there is an audible clicking sound heard and the InUse/Memory light is blinking green. This has not happened before.
Remove the usb cable from the telephone jack on the back of the printer, and plug it in the usb port.
Same for me. had loud clicking sound, and blinking inuse/memory light. i had plugged usb port into telephone port. had trouble finding usb port. found it, plugged in. all the difference in the world..... of course.
That was correct. I had my USB Cable plugged into the phone port. The USB Port is ALL THE WAY to left on the back of the printer. It's kind of hidden because the printer sinks in on the side. Thanks so much, HAPPY PRINTING........YEAH !!!!!!
Did you update the software? http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=
DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=334&modelid=12804update the driver that is compatible with your version of vista.
Dear drdar, Does your printer works fine in another OS? if not yet try, please try. If there is no problem in another OS....then.... Did you used the correct vista driver for your printer, if not ask the manufacturer for your printer driver which is compatible with Windows Vista.

I have the same problem; control panel indicates printer is offline, there is an audible clicking (like a soft turn signal) and the In Use/Memory light is blinking. Copier function works. Cable to CPU is connected. Have turned it off & on a few times. Worked yesterday on our XP system just fine........
clicking noise and memory light blinks
Changed cable, turned unit off and on several times. Problem always re-occurs every time USB cable is attached to unit.
About every other time I start up (boot up) my computer and try to print, I get the message that the printer is offline. Nothing has changed! This happens with word processors, spreadsheets, and databases.
Reboot the computer, changing nothing, and it often works.
This is getting very tiring and my frustrations with Canon software are getting to be as great as with HP.
