When I turn on the printer, after the ink carriage goes from left to right as part of the turn on process, it stops on the right hand side of the printer, there is a unusual grunge noise that appears to be coming from the sheet loader area and the top two lights (paper feeder and ink) begin flashing.
There does not appear to be any paper jams. Please advise.

Try to turn on your printer without the ink cartridges. When the printer starts and ask for the cartridges, put them back in.
(To remove the cartridges turn on the printer, watch the print head carriage move, when it is at the center quickly unplug the power cable, move the carriage by hand to a position where you can remove the cartridges, after removing the cartridges push the carriage to the right where it should be parked.)
One or both ink cartridge is failed.First remove the cartridges and clean the contacts on the carriage unit using piece of cotton and some alcohol. If problem persist open the cover and look where the carriage unit stops. There is two marks on the left side where the carriage stops. On the carriage there is a yellow arrow. If this arrow show left mark the color cartridge ia failed and need to be replaced. If the arrow show right mark replace the black cartridge. If you replace both cartridges and problem still persist carriage unit or logic board assembly is failed and your printer need service.
This is a typical cartridge problem.Try clean the contacts on the carriage unit using piece of cotton and some alcohol. If this not help open the printer cover and look when carriage unit stops. On the carriage unit have a yellow arrow. In the left sidе of printer,
where the carriage stops have a two icons. If the arrow shows left icon
change the color cartridge. If shows right icon change the black
cartridge. If this not help there is a problem in carriage unit and your printer need repair.
If you open the door on the top of the printer, while it is powered on, the ink cartridges will move to a spot that shows you the status of your ink.. There are little cartoon pictures of the cartridges with smiles or frowns to tell you if you have an empty color or black cartridge.
there are two cartridge one is the ink cartridge which can be found on the left side of the printer (in front)and the other one is the head cartridge that can be found on the right side if you will open the printer cover that is the carriage check it if the flip cover is lock properly then try to reinsert the head cartridge..
If the two lights are blinking persistently and the carriage is moving freely when the cover is opened then the logic board has problem and should be replaced. However, if there is some restriction of carriage movement or cracking noise, the optical cable should be replaced. Good luck
No body wants to take it to repairs, we all hate spending money if it can be avoideded. Do't fret. First, i would bet you have a paper jam that you have missed. This would stop the carriage and head cleaning. Open up the cover as if replacing ink. Get a torch and really thoroughly check for tiny paper jams or ujo's(unidentified jamming objects)check where paper goes too. Now close cover turn off, unplug, all cables, replug, turn on, try printing now. Post back if no good. Cheers lilacgerry
