Kenmore 665 13793K603 chemical smell increasing intensity since July

Purchased 2007. Unit is giving off a chemical-like, maybe burning metal type smell close to that of a freshly cut green pepper. Noticed the odor around July 2012. Getting stronger over time. Can find nothing burned or melted - like wires, etc. Smell is external to unit - no smell inside. Strongest at bottom back of unit where hoses and wires exit. Odor was confined to kitchen near dishwasher cabinet at first but now can smell it in nearby areas of house. Most pronounced when dishwasher cabinet is pulled out from cabinet and black rubbery exterior is still hot under insulation from running a fast or normal wash cycle. NEVER use the drying option. [AND Checked - Nothing melted inside on element.] Paper napkins, coffee filters, dishcloths in drawer cabinet base next to dishwasher absorb the odor but it diminishes once dishwasher sits outside cabinet for awhile. Thank you for any help in solving this mystery. Worried there is a safety or health problem brewing here.

SOURCE: Not Cooling and has burning smell

If you are looking for help, one must explain the problem in detail, described properly, for one one the internet to review. For myself, a would require more details of your refrig, to properly explain a resolution. Otherwise a general answer is not worth much. If you have the fully electronic temperature controlled unit, then the components can be easily chedked in 5 minutes, by the on-board service diagnostic computer. One needs to know the general operating knowledge fo the refrig, which is naturally available, since you operated it for some years. Anyway, a layman can check it out by doing what is natural. Since the refrig defrosted, it has shut down. Four years is too short for genral compressor defects. Put the power plug in and check for operating sounds. Just a few seconds. You mentioned smell (outside or inside), ket a paper tube, like a paper towel center, and sniff the evaporator motor, then the condenser motor. I will recheck later, and see if you want to continue, this troubleshooting. Regards fmauka

SOURCE: Kenmore Dishwasher #587.... doing nothing but heat dry

The problem appears to stem from the float and float switch. The float is a mushroom shaped plastic part that resides on the bottom left, just inside the door. It appears that the float does not release the float switch, causing the dishwasher to think it is full of water, and won't allow the dishwasher to fill. It's a relatively straight forward repair, but even with a new part, the same scenario is likely to repeat itself until the float or float switch is modified by Kenmore.

It indicates a water temp problem. If water temp doesn't rise at a certain rate, by the heater, it goes into this error. Probably a problem with heater or wires to it.

Hi,

Your compressor just went bad...

Hi,
You first thought was probably the correct one...the fumes from the new paint may take a few days to disspate enough not to react with the heat of the dryer...I would give it a few dyas to clear before looking any further...

My refrigerator has a strange metal/chemical smell that has made all the food taste bad. I have cleaned the refrigerator and thrown away almost everything. The smell is still present. I'm trying to figure...

Hello - did you ever figure out the metal/chemical smell problem? I seem to be having the same problem in my refrigerator/freezer. It is a side-by-side unit. We were gone over the Labor Day weekend for a few days and when we came back the unit has a metal/iron smell coming from it. Not sure what it could be.
Please let me know if you have any ideas.

Chemical Smell in freezer

LOL - Some answer you got from the technician - wasn't he more detailed ? he just told you that the chemical is in the liner of the freezer - makes no sense - if it was you would not smell it since it is INSIDE. At first I was thinking refrigerant leak would have a distinctive acid like smell to it - has your service guy checked for refrigerant leaks ? but you say that cooling is normal, so I guess we can rule this out - your freezer / refrigerator would not cool normally when there is a leak i n a critical charge system like a refrigerator compressor ! Has he checked the control boards at the back of your freezer panel for any burnt circuit boards, leaking capacitors, etc......

I think you should call and be VERY persistent something is not right, they should have been able to diagnose the problem the first service call - have them check your sealed system, control boards, etc.....tell them you are concerned about your safety and that they are responsible for any health problems or food poisoning caused by this problem - record the phone conversation - and if they refuse to inspect your unit go to small claims court - just telling you that your system "works" or cools normally is one thing - but what you describe is *NOT* normal operation of a refrigerator - this is ridiculous, why would need to even CLEAN your freezer with clorox and water, I've never ever heard of this. looks like you've fallen on some truely incompetant people.

Kenmore side-by-side has CHEMICAL SMELL ODOR inside.

You have a freon leak. With this only being 5 years old, iot's probably worth repairing, unless you are just able to buy a new one. I would have a local tech come out and check it before tossing it. I hope this answers your question and gives you some resolution. I hope to work with you again, so please record our name, email and phone number for future needs. Have a great evening!
