When you play a disc you see the "blue polaroid" background then it goes really dark. you can hear the sound of the dvd however you can barely see anything. if you press the button that turns off the screena nd let go of the button. the screen will show again for 1 second.
My sister owns this unit, and like other users on this post, her screen quit working on her. She brought it over to me to see if I could fix it before she tossed it out. I first hooked the unit up to the TV with supplied A/V cables to see if the unit was outputting video. The unit supplied video to the TV fine, so I figured the problem was with the LCD screen or the connection from the unit to the LCD.
Like another user on this post, I noticed that the video would come on for a second or two when the small depress button was pressed, but then go blank again. (This button is at just below the LCD screen on the base unit – toward the middle of the base unit. You can see there is a small notch on the LCD screen that fits into this depress button when the unit is closed. This allows the unit to know when the LCD screen is closed.)
Here comes the fix that worked for my sister’s unit – I hope it works for yours also. . .
I decided to reset the screen to the factory settings through the setup menu. This is difficult to do when the screen is blank, so I figured I would have to go hook the unit up to the TV again in order to see the setup menu. Well, I had already put the AV cables away, and I felt too lazy to dig them out again. I decided to just navigate the setup menu by pressing the depress button on each menu, which the second or two of video would give me ample time to navigate the menu. Once I was in the first setup screen and depressed the depress button the screen came on like it had been doing when I was trying to view a movie, but low and behold it did not go off like it had been when trying to view video. Since I was in the setup screen I decided to reset the unit to factory default. I then exited the setup and played a movie. The screen did not go off. I have tried to get the screen to go blank again, but it stays on. It sounds like the problem is not with the LCD screen or its connection, but rather with the operating software of the unit. It is a piece of junk, but it is working for now. I hope this helps with your units also.
I also noticed some users posting a problem with an upside down screen. Hold down the mode button and the screen will cycle through different settings … one of which is upside down.
