This morning I heard the standby generator running at my shop. We have had no power outage so I went to investigate. I found the transfer switch in the generator position. Proper utility power was present at the main panel and into the transfer switch. When I tried to manually transfer it back it sounded like it was shorting out and would not go back to utility. When I turned the breaker off at the generator I was able to switch it to utility but as soon as I turned the breaker back on (at the generator) the transfer switch went back to generator. While it is in generator mode everything worked correctly, as it did in utility mode. The unit is a 7 kw generac guardian with the supplied 100 amp transfer switch. It is about 2-3 years old and has never experienced a problem before. There is no obvious damage inside the transfer switch. I have looked for a troubleshooting guide and schematic but have not had any success yet. I also have a generator on one of my restaurants (60 kw) and this same thing happened and I had to replace the switch. I'm hoping its something as simple as a relay, that is why I have presented my question here. Thank you in advance, Walter Wiseman
I do not have its schematics but theory says circuit which is responsible to energize relay up to utility supply is not working and auto switch shift to generator mode.
I would recommend to replace it as well because its sensitive part and hard to repair.

Its the problem of the switch and it has to be replace in such cases to make it proper.it is necessary to replace the switch.
