Is the fax sensing the paper you put in to send out? Check the little black levers that poke into the document area. They should move freely when you touch them gently with a finger, and return quickly when you take your finger off. If it can't sense the paper it won't try to send a fax. If, when the paper is inserted, the display changes from whatever it said to anything else, the paper is being sensed.
Let's try dialing manually. Just left of the 1 key is a button labeled "Hook." Pressing that will take the telephone line "off-hook," like picking up the receiver of a phone. You should hear a dial tone -- if not, try adjusting the speaker volume with the buttons just right of the numbers. Once you get a dial tone, dial a number, whether it's another fax, or your own cell phone. As far as the phone company is concerned, your fax is just a phone, calling another phone. If you can make a call, and the phone at the other end rings, we're closing in on the problem. If you can dial another fax machine manually, you can still turn this into a fax call, assuming there's paper ready to fax. After the distant fax answers, touch the Start button, and your fax should take over. If you can't dial manually, try unplugging your fax from the phone line, and replacing it with a regular phone. Can you make calls with it? If not, the fax is no longer a suspect - you have a phone line problem.
Are you at a business where you need to dial 9 to get an outside line? It's easy to forget that detail when you're using a fax, but it has to dial out just like any other phone on the system.
If you can't get a dial tone at all with the fax, but it works with the phone alone, the main board in the fax is probably bad. If you can dial manually, using the Hook switch, but the same number doesn't work when you dial xxx-xxxx-Start, that sounds like a main board problem, too.

Hi there!
For you to send a fax with the Brother Fax 775 you can try these steps:
1. First make sure that you have a dial tone by lifting the handset or
just by pressing the hook button. Once you have verified you have a dial
tone press the hook button again to return to the main screen or hang up the
handset. LCD should display the date & time
If you don't have a
dial tone make sure that the telephone line cord is connected on the fax
machine's Line jack. If you don't have a dial tone still connect it to
another working outlet. If you don't have a dial tone still connect a
working telephone on the wall jack to see if you'll get a dial tone. If
you get a dial tone on the regular phone then problem is either with the line
cord or the fax machine.
2. Once you have the date & time on the LCD screen, Load the
document that you want to send on the automatic document feeder which is
directly above the LCD screen.
3. The LCD screen should change from the date/time to "Enter
Fax No. & Press Start" Once you got this screen dial the fax number
and then press Start.
Hope this helps. Rate if it works.
Thanks!
