Question about Samsung DVD-V5500 DVD Player/VCR

1 Answer

No power I have a Samsung DVD-V5500 Dvd/Vcr Combo that is not powering on as of this afternoon. We had a line of storms last night that may have surged it, although none of my other electronics were affected, including those in the same power strip. If it is fried completely, I need to know how to open the DVD tray, as I currently have a disc stuck in the player and cannot open it without power. I know these things usually have a trip, but cannot find it. Thanks.

Take off the cover of the dvd there is a plastic that has a metal round in shape in the middle .it has two screws at both end take out the screws and lift it up the plastic it is pretty hard to lift up due to the magnet on the metal but with effort it will come up, after it has lift up you can then take out the dvd.take it then to the tech as the dvd is having problem in the power supply good luck.

Samsung v5500 dvd combo problem

When you get a whirring sound, some click and disk not engaging on some disks, and not others , that is because lens cannot read the inital track on the CD/DVD.

This is either because disks are scratched , dirty or ruined by light and heath, or because the lens is dirty.

Try using a lens cleaner like the ones here.

If that does not work, then the unit must be taken apart and the lens cleaned with cotton buds and isopropyl alcohol.

DVD VCR combo has no power

I found out what the issue was with my Samsung DVD-V5500. It was the rectifier diode on the 15V tap of the high frequency transformer. This is the same issue that someone else with a later model V5600 had talked about. The diode had shorted and behaved like a piece of wire.

Seems to be a bit of weak point in the power supply. The issue can be diagnosed by using a multimeter to measure the resistance between the diode cathode and ground. If the meter is measuring 1 Ohm between the cathode and ground, your diode needs replacing. I just replaced it with a UF4003 diode from Jaycar, which is basically an Ultra Fast 200V 1A diode suitable for switching the high frequency (20-30kHz) output from the transformer.

The diode is located at the rear right hand corner of the board on the output of the power supply section. A picture below shows the new diode between orientated east-west between the large capacitors. The original diode that failed was an SHG2D SHS.

Samsung V5500 DVD VCR combo, blinking led, rest is dead

Those blinks [flashes] are fault indication (Error Codes). From the number of blinks occur at one time switch ON, you can get an idea about the faulty circuit section inside it. This will make repair easy. These are called blinking codes. Make sure about the exact number of blinking of the standby/power LED, by switching On & OFF the set, for at least two times. Count it carefully. If you wish to get some details, check the site linked here. It has details about blinking codes, and fault locating procedure, to many popular brand TVs and other devices.

If blinks continue without any pause, the main board is faulty.
