I slipped the bottom metal bars into the brackets, and snapped all the snaps to the pressed wood base. NOW, when I slip it into the base it is so insecure that a child can push the whole thing out. What am I doing wrong.

You cant, they are riveted. Also, your bassinet is most likely RECALLED.
Contact Walmart with your model and date of MFG. If it is recalled, you can get a full
refund of the original retail price, no receipt required.

Graco bassinets for a long time have been made by Simplicity. If it is older
it is most likely on recall. The model number is on the posture board (mattress support)
and you should compare your bassinet with the recalled listings on the link below.
CPSC recalled all of the Simplicity/Graco bassinets that have snaps that hold the drop
down flap where the bassinet butts up to the bed.
If it is on recall, Walmart will refund to you, the full retail price it was sold for, NO RECEIPT REQUIRED.
